Key Responsibilities:

The primary focus of this position is to support the efficient technical execution of our heritage conservation specialization. This role offers a unique opportunity to engage in a variety of experiences across a wide geographic area. You will be part of a team based in Chelmsford, providing conservation guidance to local planning authorities across multiple regions. In addition to offering conservation advice, you will engage in a diverse array of project work.

Reporting to the Principal Heritage Consultant, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the effective technical and commercial execution of our heritage conservation specialization. Your responsibilities will include managing a varied workload that encompasses providing conservation advice to local planning authorities and engaging in a wide range of heritage conservation projects.

Typical Duties Include:

  • Providing conservation advice to local authorities through written communications and meetings, including on-site consultations.
  • Contributing to the development of conservation area assessments and design guidelines.
  • Collaborating with our archaeological specialists.
  • Working jointly with our Natural and Built Environment teams.
  • Assisting in the creation of Built Heritage Statements and Conservation Management Plans.
  • Engaging in various project work.

Essential Qualifications:

  • A valid UK Driving Licence and access to a vehicle for regular use, or the ability to meet mobility requirements through alternative means.
  • A postgraduate degree in building conservation or a related field, with demonstrable professional experience, or a degree with significant experience in built heritage.
  • Membership or progress towards full membership of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC).
  • A minimum of two years of relevant experience as a heritage conservation specialist in either the public or private sector.
  • Strong knowledge of guidance, legislation, and planning policies related to the historic environment.
  • Proficient technical experience in building conservation, including site analysis and preparation of evidence-based reports.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and presentations, along with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Effective project management abilities, with a focus on prioritizing tasks while maintaining attention to key projects within defined timelines.
