Position Overview

The Wirral Breast Unit is seeking a dedicated Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) to enhance our clinical team. Our same-day diagnostic clinic is designed to provide prompt evaluations for individuals referred by their general practitioners due to breast-related symptoms, including lumps, discomfort, rashes, or unusual discharge.

Role Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the ANP is to deliver advanced, independent clinical care that is centered around the patient. This includes:

  • Conducting thorough assessments, examinations, and diagnoses.
  • Implementing treatment plans and managing patient discharges.
  • Operating within established competencies and professional guidelines to offer expert clinical advice.

This role aims to enhance patient outcomes through a rapid diagnostic service, ensuring that care is safe, compassionate, and effective.

The successful candidate will also contribute to our family history service, providing risk assessments for individuals with a familial history of breast cancer. This involves evaluating personal cancer risks and assessing family genetic predispositions.

Collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team is essential to advance Breast Services in alignment with both local and national healthcare initiatives.

Qualifications and Skills

We are looking for candidates who possess:

  • Registered nurse status with substantial post-registration experience.
  • An MSc in Advanced Practice.
  • Completion of the Non-Medical Prescribing module (V300) and competency in prescribing.
  • Current Advanced Life Support certification.
  • Qualifications in clinical examination and diagnostics.

While advanced clinical and communication skills are essential, training and support will be provided to facilitate specialization in breast care.

Main Duties

The ANP will be responsible for:

  • Initiating and conducting preliminary investigations as per established protocols, including ultrasound and mammogram requests, blood analyses, and other diagnostic tests.
  • Executing decisions made by senior medical personnel.
  • Performing advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, such as the assessment and management of breast abscesses.
  • Clerking breast admissions and conducting clinical reviews.
  • Completing discharge summaries and making appropriate referrals to other specialties.
  • Engaging in research and audit activities within the service.
  • Developing practice-based protocols to enhance professional practice.
  • Implementing training programs for healthcare professionals using specialized knowledge.
  • Promoting health strategies and lifestyle modifications to prevent disease progression.
  • Verifying deaths within the Breast Department.
