Position Overview

The successful candidate will serve as a pivotal resource for guidance, support, and expertise in safeguarding practices, collaborating closely with the Named Midwife for Safeguarding and the Specialist Midwife for Safeguarding. This role is essential in ensuring that women facing safeguarding challenges receive the necessary midwifery care, support, and direction throughout their antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal journeys, both within hospital settings and community environments.

This position will involve extensive multi-agency collaboration, including referrals to external organizations, conducting audits, managing risks, providing advisory services, facilitating training, and developing policies and procedures. The role also includes the preparation of reports and maintaining a comprehensive knowledge base in safeguarding matters.

Key Responsibilities

1. Primary Duties:

- Offer expert advice and support to midwives and medical personnel in formulating care plans for families where there are concerns regarding the safety of the unborn or recently delivered infants.

- Collaborate effectively with the Named Midwife and Specialist Midwife for Safeguarding to ensure cohesive care delivery.

- Provide guidance and support to staff in complex situations, including coordinating multi-agency resources for clients requiring additional assistance.

- Develop and revise policies and procedures in partnership with the Named Midwife and Specialist Midwife for Safeguarding to meet the needs of women identified with safeguarding issues.

- Serve as a resource for the multidisciplinary team and external agencies, including social services and law enforcement.

- Work alongside the multidisciplinary team to identify service gaps and collaborate with named professionals to create initiatives that address these deficiencies.

- Maintain and enhance connections with local midwifery departments and areas.

- Ensure compliance with record-keeping protocols in line with organizational policies and professional guidelines.

Job Responsibilities

2. Core Duties

- Ensure the timely completion of all necessary documentation within required systems, including patient records and service databases.

- Facilitate appropriate referrals and ensure that relevant actions are executed within established timelines.

- Effectively manage available resources and engage in service development initiatives as needed.

- Assist in the collection and monitoring of data required for safeguarding assurance reports.

- Ensure adherence to all policies, guidelines, and protocols.

- Promote effective communication within the multidisciplinary team, particularly regarding women and families with complex health and social care needs that may affect the welfare of the unborn child.

- Attend relevant ward, organizational, and specialist meetings as directed by the Named Midwife for Safeguarding.

- Develop and implement strategies to maintain confidentiality for women appropriately.

- Participate in the clinical incident reporting system by escalating concerns, contributing to investigations, and ensuring staff awareness of processes and outcomes.

- Act as a change agent by supporting and participating in transformations within the maternity service.

- Advocate for the safeguarding agenda in alignment with national and local policies, ensuring that care is evidence-based.
