The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is a public entity dedicated to overseeing the nuclear sector within the United Kingdom. Key Responsibilities

As the UK's independent nuclear authority, ONR possesses the legal power to enforce regulations concerning nuclear safety, civil nuclear security, safeguards, conventional health and safety, and transportation. Our responsibilities encompass the entire nuclear lifecycle, making us a unique organization. Your duties may include:

  • Enforcing regulations and investigating incidents.
  • Conducting on-site inspections and evaluating submissions from duty holders.
  • Collaborating with various stakeholders and effectively communicating our decisions.
  • Taking formal enforcement actions when necessary.

In this role, you will contribute to creating a safer nuclear industry by assessing safety cases of duty holders to ensure compliance with legislation throughout the design, operation, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. You may also engage with governmental bodies and professional organizations to shape legislation and best practices, both domestically and internationally.

Candidate Profile

We provide comprehensive training and development in the regulatory and legal aspects of this role, enabling you to apply your technical knowledge in a regulatory framework. Ideal candidates will possess:

  • A relevant degree (or equivalent) and chartered membership of a professional institution (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience in the nuclear sector or a high-hazard industry is preferred.
  • Strong judgment and effective communication skills.

Compensation and Benefits

ONR offers competitive salaries for this role, ranging from £55,019 – £93,606, along with an additional £4,052 London Weighting Allowance if applicable. You will also have access to a substantial Civil Service Pension scheme with generous employer contributions, including provisions for ill-health retirement and family benefits, as well as a generous holiday entitlement.
