Glasgow, Glasgow City, United Kingdom University of Glasgow Full time
Job Overview

The role involves making significant contributions to the project "Understanding Molecular Mechanisms Affecting Plant Growth in Response to Climate Variability", collaborating with Dr. Rucha Karnik in her Plant Science laboratory at the University of Glasgow.

The successful applicant will also be expected to assist in the preparation and submission of research publications to promote this innovative and exciting project as opportunities arise.

The research associate is anticipated to possess specialized expertise in Molecular Cell & Membrane Biology, focusing on Membrane Trafficking in plants.

Experience in recombinant protein biochemistry and/or electrophysiology is advantageous.

The objective of this 36-month project is to clarify molecular pathways that coordinate cellular membrane trafficking and ion transport mechanisms in plants, particularly in response to environmental cues.

This research will build upon previous findings from the group regarding the regulation of membrane trafficking that influences ion transport.

The research associate will primarily utilize the Arabidopsis plant model, conducting a variety of cellular, molecular, and physiological analyses to uncover novel carbon dioxide-sensitive mechanisms that regulate plant growth and stomatal function.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Design and execute assigned research tasks independently or collaboratively, aligning with project deliverables and the overarching research strategy of the group.
  2. Record research outcomes, including observations, data analysis, and interpretation, while maintaining accurate records and databases, and drafting technical reports and papers as necessary.

  3. Enhance your research profile and that of the University of Glasgow, including establishing a record of independent and collaborative publications in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals, and demonstrating research impact in terms of societal and economic benefits.

  4. Present research findings at national and international conferences, and participate in seminars and workshops to promote our research profile.

  5. Assist in identifying potential funding sources and contribute to the development of proposals to secure funding for future research initiatives.

  6. Collaborate with colleagues and engage in team meetings, seminars, and research group activities to enrich the knowledge and culture of the School/College.

  7. Support the organization, supervision, mentoring, and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced team members to ensure their effective development.

  8. Perform administrative duties related to the research group's activities, including budget management, and contribute to the overall operation of the laboratory in consultation with the Principal Investigator.

  9. Engage in modest teaching activities (e.g., demonstrations, project supervision) and associated administrative tasks as directed by the Head of School.
  10. Participate in Plant Science Public Engagement initiatives led by the Karnik laboratory.

  11. Stay informed about current knowledge and advancements in the field.

  12. Engage in personal and professional development to enhance both specialized and transferable skills in line with career aspirations.

  13. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.
