Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Molecular Biologist to join our team at the University of Glasgow. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing in-depth technical expertise in gene editing and molecular biology techniques.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement streamlined molecular cloning protocols to produce transfection-ready plasmids at scale.
  • Provide technical support for the generation of inducible gene knockout mutant parasite lines.
  • Assist with malaria culture work in a Containment Level 3 laboratory, including day-to-day maintenance of P. falciparum cultures and transfections.
  • Maintain the group's laboratory equipment and diagnose faults and troubleshoot day-to-day problems.
  • Advise, implement, and evaluate improvements to existing protocols as required.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret data using standard procedures and ensure accurate research records are kept.
  • Plan and organize day-to-day work to ensure experimental goals are delivered within agreed timescales.
  • Supervise junior staff, instruct, train, and provide guidance to research staff and students in techniques and equipment operation.
  • Contribute to the well-organized functioning of the laboratory and assist in maintaining stock levels and purchasing consumables and supplies.
  • Ensure the safe and efficient functioning of the laboratory area and facilities, including supporting risk assessments and COSHH assessments.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team meetings and departmental research group activities.
Requirements
  • Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework level 7 (Advanced Higher / HNC, SVQ 3) or equivalent in a relevant science subject.
  • Detailed technical knowledge of molecular biology and cell/tissue culture techniques.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of relevant laboratory Health and Safety legislation.
Desirable Qualifications and Skills
  • Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework level 9 (BSc Degree, SVQ Level 4) or equivalent in a relevant scientific discipline.
  • Knowledge of Equality and Diversity policy.
  • Skills in molecular biology, cell and tissue culture, and aseptic techniques.
  • IT skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office programs and relevant databases.
  • Demonstrable analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proven interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Numeracy and literacy skills.
  • A high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work individually and as part of a team.
Experience
  • Significant relevant work experience in a research laboratory.
  • Laboratory experience in core molecular biology techniques, including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, bacterial culture, and plasmid design and assembly.
  • Experience of understanding and interpreting the technical requirements of staff and students.
