Glasgow, Glasgow City, United Kingdom University of Glasgow Full time
Job Overview

The role involves making significant contributions to a research initiative titled "Resolving Molecular Mechanisms Impacting Plant Growth Responses to Climate Challenges", under the guidance of Dr. Rucha Karnik in the Plant Science department at the University of Glasgow.

The successful candidate will be tasked with assisting in the preparation and submission of research publications to promote this innovative project as opportunities arise.

The research associate is expected to possess specialized expertise in Molecular Cell & Membrane Biology, focusing on Membrane Trafficking in plants.

Experience in recombinant protein biochemistry and/or electrophysiology is preferred.

This project, spanning 36 months, aims to clarify the molecular pathways that coordinate cellular membrane trafficking and ion transport mechanisms in plants, particularly in response to environmental signals.

The research will build upon previous findings from the group regarding the regulation of membrane trafficking that influences ion transport.

The associate will primarily utilize the Arabidopsis plant model, performing a variety of cellular, molecular, and physiological analyses to uncover novel mechanisms sensitive to carbon dioxide that govern plant growth and stomatal regulation.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Design and execute assigned research tasks independently or collaboratively, aligning with project goals and the research strategy of the group.
  2. Maintain comprehensive documentation of research outputs, including data analysis and interpretation, while managing records and databases, and drafting technical reports and publications as necessary.
  3. Enhance your research profile and that of the University, establishing a track record of high-quality publications in reputable journals, and demonstrating the societal and economic impact of your research.
  4. Present research findings at national and international conferences, and participate in seminars and workshops to promote the research profile.
  5. Identify potential funding sources and assist in developing proposals to secure financial support for future research endeavors.
  6. Collaborate with colleagues and engage in team meetings and research group activities to foster a culture of knowledge sharing and output enhancement.
  7. Contribute to the mentoring and training of undergraduate and postgraduate students and less experienced team members to facilitate their development.
  8. Manage administrative tasks related to the research group, including budget oversight and laboratory operations in consultation with the Principal Investigator.
  9. Engage in teaching activities as assigned, including demonstrations and project supervision.
  10. Participate in public engagement initiatives led by the Karnik laboratory.
  11. Stay informed about advancements in the field and engage in personal and professional development to enhance both specialized and transferable skills.
  12. Perform any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School or Director of Research Institute.
  13. Contribute to the enhancement of the University's international profile in alignment with its strategic objectives.
Qualifications and Skills Required

A relevant Honours degree (SCQF Level 10) or equivalent is essential, along with a thorough understanding of Plant Molecular Biology and the specific project area.

For higher grade appointments, a PhD (SCQF Level 12) or equivalent professional experience is typically required.

Essential skills include proven research capabilities, creativity in research, excellent communication skills, strong interpersonal abilities, effective project management, and proficiency in IT and data analysis.

A commitment to open research practices and experience in outreach activities are desirable.

Compensation

The salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience, with funding available for a full-time position over a three-year period.

The University of Glasgow is committed to fostering an inclusive community that values ambition, excellence, integrity, and curiosity.
