Research Technician

The successful candidate will provide molecular biology and insectary support to research projects focused on functional genetics in mosquitoes, particularly towards the study of insecticide resistance. Your role will involve supporting researchers in the group by using molecular biology, CRISPR genome editing, and general genetic manipulation techniques to characterise and manipulate the mosquito genome.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lab Record Keeping: Prepare and maintain accurate laboratory records of methods, sample details, and results.
  • Technical Support: Provide an efficient and effective technical service to research teams.
  • Plasmid Cloning: Undertake general plasmid cloning and screening procedures.
  • Bioinformatics: Perform basic bioinformatic analysis and plasmid and primer design.
  • Embryo Injection: Inject mosquito embryos with DNA constructs.
  • CRISPR Design: Assist in the design of guide RNAs for CRISPR-based genome editing.
  • Insectary Management: Assist with the rearing of uninfected mosquito colonies in the insectaries.
  • Standard Operating Procedures: Contribute to the development of standard operating procedures and risk assessments.
  • Data Analysis: Collate and assess data using Excel, Prism, and other appropriate software.
Requirements:
  • Education: BSc in Biological Science or a science-related subject (or equivalent experience).
  • Molecular Biology Knowledge: Good knowledge of general principles of molecular biology.
  • Hands-on Experience: Hands-on experience of DNA cloning and general molecular biology techniques.
  • Research Laboratory Experience: Relevant experience of working within a research laboratory and experience of standard laboratory protocols.
  • Adaptability: Ability to implement and adapt biological techniques or protocols.
  • Scientific Experimentation: Experience of conducting scientific experiments.
