Job Overview

The successful candidate will serve as a highly specialized clinical practitioner, collaborating with general pediatricians to develop and deliver an expert, efficient, and high-quality service for patients in the children's allergy department and all pediatric patients requiring allergy management at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust.

Key Responsibilities

The role entails providing highly specialized clinical advice and support within a hospital environment. The practitioner will demonstrate leadership within a multi-professional and multi-agency team as the clinical expert in allergy.

Responsibilities include managing a caseload of patients with allergies in both acute and community settings, developing nurse-led clinics, and creating a tailored service for timely assessments and reviews.

The practitioner will be proficient in all aspects of care specific to their practice while maintaining a holistic, patient-centered approach that fosters clinical development. They will support and lead the delivery of evidence-based, patient-focused care of the highest standard, empowering children and young people with allergies and their caregivers to manage their conditions effectively, thereby enhancing their independence and overall well-being.

Detailed Responsibilities

1. Deliver expert, efficient, and high-quality services to patients attending the Children's Allergy Service and all pediatric patients requiring allergy management.

2. Oversee the daily management of nurse-led services within the Children's Allergy Service.

3. Serve as a role model and specialist nurse, providing clinical knowledge to colleagues through multidisciplinary team meetings involving children, young people, and their parents/carers.

4. Act as the primary contact for families seeking advice and support.

5. Lead the development of robust, evidence-based care pathways for children with allergies or suspected allergies.

6. Conduct nurse-led clinics for children and young people with allergies, ensuring personalized allergy management plans and compliance checks.

7. Facilitate and support the delivery of specialized allergy care to all members of the multidisciplinary team, including acute/community nurses, doctors, teachers, and schools.

8. Support consultant-led allergy clinics and lead nurse-led clinics, autonomously performing allergy testing and communicating relevant information to medical and nursing colleagues.

9. Participate in multidisciplinary child protection meetings as necessary, acting as the lead professional when required.

10. Maintain collaborative relationships with other members of the multidisciplinary team and participate in the shared care of children with multiple care needs.

11. Continuously review and evaluate personal role and clinical practice, ensuring care is evidence-based and adheres to current guidelines.

12. Ensure the safe administration of medications, adhering to relevant guidelines and policies.

13. Maintain accurate records while ensuring the safety and confidentiality of such information.

14. Implement precautions to minimize the risk of cross-infection when exposed to body fluids.

15. Create an environment that encourages patients to seek help, advice, and education.

16. Request and interpret investigations to assist in establishing differential diagnoses, coordinating with other MDT members as necessary.

17. Make appropriate onward referrals based on the child's needs.

18. Collaborate with non-pediatric colleagues to develop policies that facilitate smooth transitions to adult services.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential Criteria
  • Registered as a First Level Nurse on Part 8 or Part 15 of the Nursing & Midwifery Council Register.
  • Possess a relevant Degree or be willing to pursue Degree-level study.
  • Hold a post-basic qualification in a relevant area that enhances clinical practice.
  • Achieve Mentorship Level 6/7 or ENB 998.
  • Complete Level 3 safeguarding training.
  • Possess a full UK driving license.
