Lancashire, United Kingdom East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust Full time
Job Overview

The successful candidate will serve as a highly skilled clinical practitioner, collaborating with general pediatricians to design and deliver a superior, efficient, and high-quality service for patients in the children's allergy department and all pediatric patients needing allergy care at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust.

Key Responsibilities

The role involves providing specialized clinical guidance and support within a healthcare environment. The post holder will exhibit leadership within a multi-professional and multi-agency team as the clinical authority in allergy management.

The individual will work in conjunction with general pediatricians to oversee the care of patients with allergies, both in acute and community settings. They will establish nurse-led clinics and a tailored service to ensure timely evaluations and follow-ups.

The post holder will be an authority in all aspects of care pertinent to their specialty, while upholding a comprehensive, patient-centered approach that promotes clinical advancement. They will lead and deliver evidence-based, patient-focused care of the highest standard, supporting children and young people with allergies and their caregivers to empower them in managing their conditions and achieving optimal health, social, and psychological well-being through the provision of clinical, social, and emotional support.

Working for Our Organization

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust is committed to providing the highest quality care to its patients. We employ dedicated professionals, some of whom have received accolades for their contributions and are recognized internationally. With the backing of our staff and the community, we have ambitious plans to continue enhancing the standard of patient care and services.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

1. Function as a highly specialized practitioner, effectively delivering expert, efficient, and high-quality services to patients in the Children's Allergy Service and all pediatric patients requiring allergy management.

2. Assume responsibility and accountability for the daily management of nurse-led services within the Children's Allergy Service.

3. Serve as a role model and specialist nurse, imparting clinical expertise to colleagues during multi-disciplinary team meetings involving children, young people, and their parents/carers.

4. Act as an autonomous first point of contact for families seeking advice and support regarding allergies.

5. Lead the development of comprehensive, up-to-date, evidence-based care pathways for children attending pediatric departments due to allergies or suspected allergies.

6. Conduct autonomous nurse-led clinics for children and young people with allergies, suspected allergies, and complex allergy cases, ensuring all patients have personalized allergy management plans and compliance checks.

7. Exemplify expert practice by facilitating and supporting the delivery of direct specialist allergy care to all members of the multi-disciplinary team, including acute/community nurses, doctors, teachers, and schools.

8. Support consultant-led allergy clinics and lead nurse-led allergy clinics, autonomously performing allergy testing (skin prick testing, component testing, and inpatient challenges) while communicating relevant information to medical and nursing colleagues.

9. Participate in multi-disciplinary child protection meetings as necessary, acting as the lead professional when required.

10. Foster and maintain connections with other members of the multi-disciplinary team and engage in shared care for children with multiple care needs.

11. Continuously assess and evaluate personal role and clinical practice, informing the review process to ensure care is evidence-based and adheres to current NICE and best practice guidelines.

12. Ensure the safe administration of all medications, performing accurate drug calculations in accordance with NMC Guidelines, Directorate, and Trust policies.

13. Maintain clear, accurate records while ensuring the safety and confidentiality of such documentation.

14. Implement adequate precautions to minimize the risk of cross-infection when exposed to body fluids, including the safe disposal of such materials.

15. Create an environment that encourages patients to seek help, advice, and education.

16. Request and interpret investigations that assist in establishing a differential diagnosis, prior to liaising with or referring to another member of the multi-disciplinary team.

17. Make appropriate onward referrals based on the child's needs.

18. Collaborate with non-pediatric colleagues to develop policies that facilitate smooth transitions to adult services.

Additional responsibilities include organization responsibilities, communication, research and clinical audit, and training and development requirements as detailed in the full job description.
