Job Overview

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategy Development: Formulate and execute comprehensive accessibility strategies, policies, and procedures to enhance user experience.
  • Quality Assurance & Evaluation: Shape the quality assurance framework and testing methodologies; perform audits and evaluations to pinpoint areas for enhancement.
  • Collaboration & Execution: Partner with design, development, and product teams to weave accessibility into all services; oversee the implementation of the Internal Accessibility Center of Excellence testing process.
  • Training & Guidance: Offer expert advice, training, and support on accessibility best practices and assistive technologies to colleagues.
  • Leadership & Mentorship: Direct and mentor a team of accessibility experts; manage talent development and succession planning initiatives.
  • Representation & Strategic Decision Making: Act as a representative for HMRC in external discussions and events; make informed decisions regarding accessibility testing protocols.
  • Continuous Learning: Stay informed about emerging trends, technologies, and regulations in accessibility, and recommend actions to ensure compliance.

  • Technical Skills: Proficient in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and WAI ARIA to assist service owners with remediation efforts.
  • Audit Proficiency: Experience in performing comprehensive accessibility audits and familiarity with evaluation tools and testing methods, including manual testing.

Essential Qualifications

  • Regulatory Acumen: Strong understanding of the Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations 2018, the Equality Act 2010, and the implications of non-compliance.
  • WCAG Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of WCAG 2.1 and 2.2 standards.
  • Assistive Technology Expertise: Proficient in testing with various assistive technology tools.
  • Leadership Background: Demonstrated experience in leading and managing teams effectively.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience within a large, multifaceted organization with a range of digital products and services.
  • Understanding of agile methodologies and their relevance to accessibility initiatives.
  • Familiarity with accessibility testing tools and automation frameworks.
  • Certification or formal training in accessibility standards and best practices.
