Devon, United Kingdom Devon County Council Full time

Join the dedicated team at Devon County Council as we expand our efforts to support children facing challenges in school attendance. We are seeking to fill several positions, including:

  • 1 x Senior Child Attendance Support Specialist (fixed-term contract)
  • 6 x Child Attendance Support Specialists (both permanent and fixed-term roles available)
  • 4 x Family Support Practitioners (fixed-term contract)

The mission of our Child Attendance Support Team is to deliver targeted assistance to children who are struggling to attend school. Our approach involves collaborating with the child, their family, and educational institutions to identify obstacles to attendance and create a tailored intervention strategy that empowers all parties to take constructive steps forward.

Our service is committed to fostering significant and enduring improvements in the lives of children and young people with special educational needs (SEN) and additional requirements throughout Devon.

The Child Attendance Support Team collaborates with various agencies to ensure timely access to appropriate services for children, young people, and their families.

We aim to attract and retain skilled individuals who share our vision of an inclusive community where the significance of school attendance is recognized and appreciated.

These roles may require some flexibility, including evening and weekend work.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist children and young people who are experiencing difficulties with school attendance to reintegrate and continue their educational journey.
  • Engage with children to understand their perspectives on attendance barriers, providing individualized support both at home and in educational settings.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with schools and other organizations to facilitate reintegration through a structured, evidence-based intervention plan.
  • Manage a designated caseload of children and families within a specific geographic area, collaborating across multiple disciplines.

Successful candidates will possess exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to build rapport with children, young people, and their families, offering support and constructive feedback as necessary. Empathy, patience, strong risk assessment capabilities, and a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by young people regarding school attendance are essential.

As this role involves working with children, young people, and families in their homes and educational environments, excellent time management skills and an understanding of hybrid working practices are crucial. Applicants must hold a valid driving license and have access to a vehicle for regular business purposes.
