Position Overview

We are looking to recruit a Research Computing Officer to become a vital member of our dynamic team dedicated to supporting researchers engaged in high-performance computing for projects related to structural biology, molecular dynamics simulations, and bioinformatics.

Your role will encompass the management of various server systems, with a specific emphasis on those utilized for cryo-electron microscopy, structural biology, and protein design.

You will collaborate closely with another research computing officer, forming an essential part of the IT team within the Department of Biochemistry. Additionally, you will work in conjunction with the cryogenic electron microscopy facility manager, contributing to the cryo-EM facility team.

The starting salary will be determined based on your qualifications and relevant experience, as well as the funding available.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess at least a GCSE standard or equivalent, along with an advanced degree and/or substantial experience in managing large-scale computing platforms. Extensive experience in performing routine maintenance on computer hardware is essential, as is the ability to troubleshoot complex hardware and middleware issues independently.

You should have advanced knowledge of Linux/Unix operating system administration and be proficient in Linux/Unix scripting languages. Familiarity with sharing protocols such as NFS and SAMBA, networking protocols, and knowledge of Infiniband is also expected.

A meticulous approach to technical documentation and record-keeping is crucial, alongside a solid understanding of distributed storage systems and volume management systems. Strong organizational skills, the ability to prioritize your workload, and the capacity to work with minimal supervision are essential, as is the ability to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels.
