About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Research Computing Officer to join our vibrant team at the University of Oxford. As a key member of our IT team, you will provide support for researchers conducting high-performance computing as part of research projects involving structural biology, molecular dynamics simulations, and bioinformatics.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage multiple server systems, with a particular focus on those for cryo-electron microscopy, structural biology, and protein design.
  • Work closely with a second research computing officer and the cryogenic electron microscopy facility manager to ensure seamless collaboration.
  • Provide expert technical support for researchers, troubleshooting complex hardware and middleware problems autonomously.
  • Develop and maintain advanced knowledge of Linux/Unix operating system administration, scripting languages, and sharing protocols.
  • Ensure meticulous technical documentation and record keeping, and contribute to the development of distributed storage systems and volume management systems.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Education to GCSE standard or equivalent.
  • An advanced degree and/or significant experience of managing large-scale computing platforms.
  • Extensive experience of performing routine maintenance tasks on computer hardware.
  • Advanced knowledge of Linux/Unix operating system administration and proficiency in Linux/Unix scripting languages.
  • Good organisations skills with the ability to prioritise your own workload and work with minimum supervision.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate well with people at all levels.
