About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Research Computing Officer to join our vibrant team at the University of Oxford. As a key member of our IT department, you will provide support for researchers conducting high-performance computing as part of research projects involving structural biology, molecular dynamics simulations, and bioinformatics.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage multiple server systems, with a particular focus on those for cryo-electron microscopy, structural biology, and protein design.
  • Work closely with a second research computing officer as an integral part of the IT team of the Department of Biochemistry.
  • Collaborate with the cryogenic electron microscopy facility manager and be part of the cryo-EM facility team.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks on computer hardware and troubleshoot complex hardware and/or middleware problems autonomously.
  • Administer Linux/Unix operating systems and have proficiency in Linux/Unix scripting languages.
  • Have advanced knowledge of sharing protocols, networking protocols, and Infiniband.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation and records.
  • Communicate effectively with people at all levels.

About You

You will be educated to GCSE standard or equivalent and have an advanced degree and/or significant experience of managing large-scale computing platforms. You will have a meticulous approach to technical documentation and record keeping, and good organizational skills with the ability to prioritize your own workload and work with minimum supervision.
