Main Purpose:
The Lead Speech and Language Therapist will be an integral part of a multidisciplinary team, delivering speech and language therapy within a neurobehavioral framework to clients with acquired brain injuries (ABI). This role encompasses overseeing the Speech and Language Therapy (SaLT) services within the organization, consulting with both internal and external professionals, family members, and the individuals receiving support.
Main Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Implement the neurobehavioral model for brain injury, applying current research and best practices.
- Oversee and prioritize a caseload of clients with intricate mental and physical health challenges and/or challenging behaviors.
- Utilize evidence-based methodologies to assess, plan, execute, and review therapeutic interventions.
- Conduct thorough assessments to establish suitable rehabilitation objectives, care plans, and communication and dysphagia therapy programs.
- Involve clients in assessment, rehabilitation, and discharge planning, addressing communication barriers and ensuring informed consent.
- Perform swallowing assessments, offering recommendations and training for the safe management and rehabilitation of dysphagia.
- Maintain responsibilities in risk management, safeguarding, and health and safety protocols.
- Ensure the upkeep of equipment and adherence to Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC) standards.
Leadership Responsibilities:
- Function flexibly and innovatively as an independent clinical professional, potentially as the sole clinician.
- Guide the planning, development, and evaluation of SaLT services within the team.
- Encourage quality, effective practices, continuous improvement, and change management.
- Establish and sustain excellent working relationships within a collaborative, multidisciplinary framework.
- Engage in clinical governance, quality assurance, and service enhancement initiatives.
- Serve as a role model, exemplifying professional accountability and responsibility.
Evidence Research and Development:
- Conduct research and audit projects pertinent to speech and language therapy.
- Participate in sustainability efforts and contribute to SaLT-related decision-making processes.
- Collaborate with relevant clinical teams, departments, and support networks.
Facilitation of Learning:
- Foster a culture of learning and continuous improvement, providing constructive feedback and engaging in staff development.
- Raise awareness of SaLT within the team and support the education and training of colleagues.
- Participate in supervision, reflecting on personal performance and developmental needs.
Personal Development, Supervision, and Training:
- Take responsibility for personal practice and engage in ongoing professional development.
- Participate in clinical supervision, training sessions, and mandatory courses as necessary.
- Maintain professional competence and seek assistance when required.
About You:
The ideal candidate will possess:
- A degree in Speech and Language Therapy.
- HCPC registration.
- Achieved Dysphagia Competencies.
- Extensive experience in hospital or residential environments, with specialized knowledge of SaLT models and interventions in ABI.
- Experience with speech and language therapy outcome measures.
- A minimum of 4 years of qualified experience, including complex case management.
- At least 2 years of experience working with adults with neurological conditions or 4+ years in an alternative clinical setting.
