Team Overview:

The Management Accounting team is an integral part of our financial planning and reporting division, consisting of 21 finance professionals, most of whom hold professional qualifications. This team is responsible for financial business partnering, management accounting, and comprehensive reporting of balance sheets and profit and loss statements.

Role Overview:

The primary responsibility of the Financial Reporting Specialist is to ensure the precise and timely reporting of actual financial results and analyses for GWR.

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver accurate and timely profit and loss statements for your designated business area, ensuring clarity for relevant stakeholders.
  • Post all necessary journals for the finance department in collaboration with the Finance Analyst.
  • Complete the period-end actuals bridging process efficiently and accurately.
  • Ensure all period-end journals are supported by appropriate analysis for sign-off.
  • Conduct thorough cost analysis to support financial decision-making.
  • Prepare and finalize balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Ensure the balance sheet is meticulously maintained, with all open items properly documented.
  • Address incorrect ledger postings at their source and provide training to mitigate future occurrences.
  • Calculate and record accruals, prepayments, and provisions, collaborating with Accounts Payable to enhance process efficiency.
  • Provide necessary information to meet all Department for Transport reporting requirements.
  • Foster strong relationships with Finance Business Partners to ensure timely delivery of postings and results.
  • Participate in relevant business meetings to gain insights into your business area.
  • Collaborate with the reporting team to highlight cash flow impacts and assess business risks and opportunities.
  • Develop robust procedures and documentation for all financial processes.
  • Engage in cross-training with fellow Management Accountants to enhance team support and reduce operational risks.
  • Undertake additional tasks as required to support the team and the broader organization.

Essential Qualifications:

Knowledge:

  • Comprehensive understanding of accounting principles related to balance sheets and profit and loss accounts.
  • Familiarity with accruals and prepayments.
  • Solid grasp of double-entry accounting and key financial transactions.
  • Knowledge of stock and financial lease accounting.
  • Experience in managing and enhancing financial controls.
  • Understanding of cash flow reporting and variance analysis.

Skills:

  • Proficient in financial systems and software, including Excel and Word.
  • Ability to analyze data, interpret variances, resolve issues, and anticipate challenges.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of engaging with both financial and non-financial colleagues.
  • Professional demeanor, demonstrating confidence and integrity at all times.

Experience:

  • Prior experience in a large finance team.
  • Experience with multiple financial systems and understanding their interfaces.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of management accounting.

Location:

This position is based in a flexible work environment, with expectations for in-office presence as required by business needs.

Working Hours:

The role encompasses a 37-hour work week.
