Main Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing high-quality medical leadership to the Tier 4 team based at the St Aubyn Centre in Colchester. This will involve working across both the Generic Adolescent Unit and the Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit, with a maximum of 5 patients on each ward.

The post holder will be part of an extensive multidisciplinary team, including 2 other consultant colleagues, two specialty doctors, and two core trainees. The team provides the best care for young people aged 13 to 18 and plays an instrumental part in their recovery.

Key Duties
  • Screening referrals and conducting tabletop assessments for young people admitted to the unit.
  • Participating in meetings with the collaborative about complex cases in the East of England and liaising with community teams.
  • Assessing and treating young people with acute, complex, and high-risk presentations, mostly admitted on a formal basis.
  • Working closely with colleagues across all disciplines to regularly review the progress of treatment, including medication reviews, assessments of mental states, participation in ward reviews, CPA reviews, and care planning meetings.
  • Participating in team meetings to ensure clinical governance activities are maintained, including quality and management meetings.
  • Participating in the training of core trainees, including acting as a clinical supervisor.
  • Using allocated time for agreed SPA activity and being compliant with the Trust's programme of mandatory training.
  • Collaborating with colleagues to cover absences due to annual leave and study leave and short-term sickness.
Person Specification

The ideal candidate will have:

  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Registration with the General Medical Council and on the Specialist Register.
  • Meets Royal College of Psychiatrists criteria for appointment to the post of Consultant.
  • Section 12 Approval and Approved Clinician Status.
Eligibility

The successful candidate will be:

  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practice at the time of appointment.
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months.
  • Approved clinician status.
  • Approved under Section 12.

The ideal candidate will be able to:

  • Manage clinical complexity and uncertainty.
  • Make decisions based on evidence and experience, including the contribution of others.
  • Meet duties under MHA and MCA.
