Clinical Coding Specialist

An exciting opportunity has emerged within our department for a full-time Clinical Coding Specialist, who possesses the enthusiasm and drive to join our dynamic Clinical Coding Department. The successful candidate must hold the National Clinical Coding Qualification (NCCQ) or have substantial clinical coding experience in an acute healthcare setting. Responsibilities will include the clinical coding of intricate acute specialties by extracting clinical data from patient records and converting it into diagnostic (ICD10) and procedural (OPCS) coding classifications.

Key Responsibilities

The post-holder will adopt a flexible approach to their work, collaborating with team members to meet stringent deadlines. A solid understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology is essential, along with a commendable level of education.

This role necessitates interaction and collaboration with clinicians across various specialties, ensuring that procedures and diagnoses are accurate and comply with national standards.

Job Responsibilities

This position requires an organized approach to managing workload and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment where accuracy and attention to detail are paramount. Experience working under tight deadlines is essential.

Remote work options are available for certain periods, utilizing secure access.

The role will involve working across all Barts Health Hospital sites, including various locations, with the expectation of travel between sites as necessary.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Educated to A level, including Mathematics and English, or equivalent experience
  • Accredited Clinical Coding Qualification
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development

Desirable

  • Certificate in Anatomy & Physiology
  • Medical Terminology qualification

Experience

Essential

  • Extensive specialist coding knowledge supported by theoretical and practical experience
  • Participation in refresher and specialty workshops
  • Ability to code across various specialty areas
  • Experience working collaboratively within a team and independently, utilizing initiative as required
  • Familiarity with Patient Administration Systems (PAS) and hospital systems

Desirable

  • Prior experience coding complex cases, including Neurosurgery and Renal cases

Skills

  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to convey complex concepts to diverse audiences

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint)

  • Knowledge of IDC10, OPCS4, HRG4+, PbR, and financial flows
