Job Responsibilities
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is looking for a dedicated Wage Laborer to join our Buckingham Area Headquarters team. In this role, you will be responsible for various manual labor tasks essential for the successful completion of projects. Your key responsibilities will include:
• Conducting flagging operations to ensure safety on work sites.
• Assisting in the establishment of work zones for project execution.
• Engaging in strenuous manual labor, including lifting heavy objects up to 50 pounds regularly.
• Operating and maintaining both hand and power tools effectively.
• Utilizing light and medium machinery as required for maintenance tasks.
This position is classified as a wage role, with a limit of 1,500 working hours within a designated twelve-month period. Please note that state benefits are not applicable for this position.
Positions are essential, meaning you may be called upon to work outside of regular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, especially during emergency situations.
Minimum Qualifications
To be considered for this position, candidates must possess:
• The ability to perform demanding physical labor.
• Proficiency in operating and maintaining light and medium equipment utilized in highway maintenance and repair.
• A valid driver's license.
• Familiarity with highway maintenance tools, materials, methods, and procedures.
• Competence in handling both hand-held and power tools.
• The ability to comprehend and follow both oral and written instructions.
Additional Considerations
Preferred qualifications include:
• Experience in equipment operation and preventive maintenance practices.
• A background in Maintenance, Construction, or a related field through training, experience, or education.
• Experience in emergency operations, including snow removal and storm response.
• A history of performing roadway maintenance or construction activities.
