Position Overview

This role is a temporary six-month appointment designed to provide coverage for an established Clinical Associate position within the Hepatology team. The selected individual will collaborate with both medical and surgical teams to enhance care delivery across various settings, including inpatient management and the treatment of both acute and scheduled admissions. This position was created to bolster the existing medical and surgical teams within the hepatology unit.

The Paediatric Liver Unit at Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust is a multi-disciplinary service that caters to children with liver diseases, acute liver failure, and those requiring liver and small bowel transplants, as well as addressing a variety of hepato-biliary surgical conditions.

Located on Ward 8, the unit features 15 beds, which include a 6-bed high dependency unit, 6 isolation rooms, a dedicated elective surgical bed, a small bowel transplant assessment bed, and two low dependency beds for elective admissions.

The unit collaborates closely with the transplant service at a leading NHS Foundation Trust, including transition clinics and various departments within the organization.

The guiding principle of the Liver Unit is to deliver family-centered care, supported by a robust multi-disciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Work in close partnership with the medical and surgical postgraduate doctor teams.
  • Contribute to the achievement and maintenance of targets related to patient care.
  • Assist in the development of efficient care pathways in line with best practices and national standards.
  • Support initiatives related to national audits.
  • Actively participate in the advancement of the specialty within the Trust.

The role will be supervised by the duty consultant and an educational supervisor to facilitate career development.

Clinical Duties

The Clinical Associate will assist the medical and surgical teams in managing a specific caseload of patients within the specialty. Responsibilities will include:

  • Taking comprehensive medical histories and conducting physical examinations.
  • Performing clinical tasks such as phlebotomy, cannulation, and small bowel stoma biopsies.
  • Supporting the management of children with various liver diseases and providing peri-operative care for procedures including endoscopy, liver biopsy, hepatobiliary surgery, and transplantation.
  • Developing specialized knowledge and expertise in the field, serving as a resource for the clinical team and allied health professionals.
