Position Overview

We are seeking a Lead Oncology Nurse to become part of our dedicated team at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. This role is integral to the Systematic Anti-Cancer Treatment (SACT) Unit, where you will provide expert care and support to patients undergoing cancer treatment.

The Lead Oncology Nurse will play a crucial role in delivering high-quality clinical care while offering specialized knowledge to patients and their families navigating the complexities of cancer treatment. You will be responsible for overseeing the management and support of nursing staff, ensuring that patients receive the highest standard of care during their treatment journey.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and manage a clinical area within the SACT unit.
  • Administer SACT and intravenous medications as part of a nurse-led service.
  • Provide comprehensive information to patients and caregivers regarding cancer treatment processes, including diagnosis, prognosis, and symptom management.
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of oncology medications, including their potential side effects and complications.
  • Ensure patient safety during treatment administration, including managing acute reactions and complications.
  • Exhibit proficiency in cannulation and venepuncture, supported by appropriate training.

Qualifications

Essential Criteria

  • Registered with the NMC.
  • SACT qualification.
  • Experience in mentoring and supervising junior nursing staff.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Evidence of involvement in service improvement initiatives.

Desirable Criteria

  • Leadership training.
  • Course in physical assessment.
  • Advanced communication training.
  • Psychological therapies Level 2.
