Job Summary

As a Human Factors Specialist at the Health and Safety Executive, you will play a critical role in ensuring employers across Great Britain work safely, protecting people and places. You will utilize your technical knowledge and experience to influence not only individual employers but whole industry sectors, making a tangible impact on workplace safety.

This role is ideal for those who appreciate variety and a challenge, while enjoying flexibility and the support of experienced professionals. You will work as part of a national team, collaborating with technical specialists from multiple disciplines, including mechanical engineering and process safety, to identify and mitigate risks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct Human Factors inspections, applying your expertise to identify risk and underlying issues on site, enabling effective decision-making on control measures.
  • Assess the adequacy of safety reports for upper-tier COMAH sites, both for new sites and where modifications are planned.
  • Participate in investigation teams to seek out accident and incident root causes, identifying recommendations to ensure lessons are learned.
  • Act as an expert witness, providing specialist opinion on Human Factors aspects of accidents and incidents.
  • Contribute to the production and revision of Human Factors guidance and standards for HSE and other industry bodies.
  • Prioritize continuing professional development, both technically and in non-technical skills, and participate in cross-division Human Factors training and coaching.

Inspections and investigations may require regular travel and overnight stays across Great Britain.

Specialist Training Programme (STP)

New specialist inspectors are required to complete a 2-year Specialist Training Programme (STP), comprising legal training and assessment to prepare them fully for their regulatory role.

Person Specification

Essential Skills and Criteria:

  • Practical experience of undertaking Human Factors projects in the workplace, specifically in the control of risks within major hazards industries.
  • Practical experience of applying Human Factors principles to engineering design projects.
  • Practical experience of assessing human reliability, both qualitatively and quantitatively, in the context of major accident risk assessments.
  • Practical experience of using Human Factors methods for workload management, fatigue, staffing levels, organizational change, and critical communications.
  • Experience of working in multidisciplinary teams, assessing the importance of Human Factors issues alongside other stakeholders' concerns.

A full driving license is required, unless a case for reasonable adjustments can be made under the Equality Act 2010.

Qualifications

A degree in Ergonomics or Human Factors, or a degree in an engineering subject or psychology with a relevant post-graduate qualification in Ergonomics, Human Factors, or Organizational Psychology.

Memberships

Registered Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF) or the British Psychological Society (BPS), or the academic and professional qualifications to apply and achieve Chartered status.
