Oxford, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom Archangel Imaging Full time

We are seeking a motivated and skilled Robotics Engineer with a passion for drones and autonomous systems, eager to contribute to a pioneering technology firm focused on delivering exceptional autonomous solutions.

At Archangel Imaging, you will collaborate with a dynamic and innovative team to create transformative AI applications that assist organizations with critical needs, enhancing the safety of personnel and infrastructure in expansive, remote locations. Our partnerships with leading drone and robotics firms enable us to develop comprehensive solutions utilizing advanced technologies.

Role Overview

Your mission will be to develop mission-level autonomy for Uncrewed Vehicles (UxVs), allowing them to comprehend complex tasks and operate independently in challenging conditions devoid of GPS or other navigational aids. We primarily utilize visual methodologies to achieve our objectives and are compatible with various drone platforms. Your responsibilities will include working with ROS and programming in Python and C++, delivering functional UxV products and facilitating integration with third-party solutions through standard technologies like MAVLink.

Key Responsibilities

  • Designing, optimizing, and maintaining algorithms for our drone autonomy systems using ROS.
  • Integrating new sensors and AI-driven inputs into the system while ensuring robust interfaces for enhanced position estimation.
  • Creating communication interfaces for UxVs, including interactions with third-party autopilots.
  • Establishing and automating testing protocols to guarantee the reliability of autonomy components.
  • Driving continuous enhancement of the performance and efficiency of autonomy systems.
  • Collaborating closely with the team to ensure comprehensive system visibility and functionality.

Essential Qualifications

  • A degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • A solid understanding of drone and UxV fundamentals (sensors, actuators, control theory, navigation, autopilots, etc.).
  • Proficient knowledge of open-source protocols and frameworks commonly utilized in UxVs (MAVLink, PX4, Ardupilot, etc.).
  • Strong programming skills in Python and C++, with experience in a collaborative codebase.
  • Experience with ROS2 or ROS.
  • Excellent mathematical and analytical capabilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in computer vision-based positioning and navigation for UxVs (Visual Odometry, SLAM).
  • Familiarity with simulation tools (Gazebo, X-Plane, Airsim, Unreal, etc.).
  • Knowledge of optical sensors and solutions.
  • Experience in designing and validating complex robotic systems.
  • Basic skills in rapid prototyping (PCB design, CAD, 3D printing, etc.).
  • Understanding of deploying code on low SWaP computers.
  • Proven track record of delivering functional robotic systems.

Benefits of Joining

  • The opportunity to significantly impact the development of cutting-edge technology within a rapidly expanding startup.
  • A fast-paced environment with a talented, positive, and high-achieving team.
  • A forward-thinking, supportive culture that includes company retreats and strategic alignment.
  • World-class growth opportunities and training resources, including self-development days and drone pilot training.
  • Merit-based compensation structure.
  • 5% employer pension contribution.
  • 25 days of holiday plus public holidays.
  • A variety of evolving perks, including team lunches and a Cycle2work scheme.
  • Relocation support through AI Futures Grants, providing financial assistance for relocation costs.

Security Clearance

Due to the sensitive nature of some projects, candidates should be prepared to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for this position.

Location – Central Oxford.

As a Robotics Engineer, you will engage with both hardware and software platforms and have regular access to our lab.
