Position Overview

Pharmacy Support Technician - Band 2, Permanent Position

Join our dedicated team within the Pharmacy Department at Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust. This role is essential in assisting our pharmacists and technicians in delivering a reliable dispensing and distribution service to various clinical areas.

While prior experience in pharmacy is beneficial, we are committed to providing comprehensive training for candidates without previous exposure to the field.

You will also have the opportunity to enroll in a GPhC accredited course focused on Pharmacy Stock Management.

Candidates should ideally possess GCSEs in Mathematics and English at grades A-C (or equivalent), along with basic computer skills. Functional skills training can be pursued concurrently with the stock management course.

Key Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include supporting pharmacists and technical staff in the Dispensary, Aseptic Dispensing Unit, and Pharmacy Receipt & Distribution. This will involve visiting clinical areas to ensure a comprehensive pharmaceutical service is maintained.

Job Duties

SECTION 1 - PRIMARY DUTIES:

Ward Services

- Participate in the pharmaceutical stock replenishment service for designated wards and departments, ensuring adequate stock levels are maintained. This includes visiting clinical areas to assess stock levels and expiry dates of medications.

- Rotate stock in medicine cupboards to prioritize the use of shorter-dated items and minimize waste.

- Raise orders for ward and department supplies through the pharmacy computer system.

- Collaborate with nursing and pharmacy staff to ensure stock lists reflect the needs of clinical areas.

- Monitor unexpected changes in product usage and report to the supervisor or ward pharmacist.

Distribution and Ward Order Assembly

- Assist in the receipt, storage, and control of stock in the Pharmacy Receipt and Distribution area.

- Assemble items against orders for clinical areas, including community clinics.

- Utilize the pharmacy computer system to document issues and returns from clinical areas.

- Work with pharmacy team members to address supply issues promptly.

Pharmacy Stock Control

- Conduct regular stock checks to ensure accurate computer records of stock holdings.

- Report stock shortages to procurement colleagues to maintain availability for patient care.

- Participate in expiry date checks to ensure proper stock rotation and report any out-of-date items.

- Maintain cleanliness and organization in storage areas in compliance with Health and Safety regulations.

Receipt of Goods

- Receive and verify goods against delivery notes, ensuring accurate entry of batch numbers.

- Assess returned pharmaceutical products and manage stock appropriately.

Dispensary Duties

- Perform reception duties, including answering inquiries and processing prescriptions.

- Ensure accurate patient details are recorded and assist with payment processes.

- Support general dispensary operations, including preparation and dispensing of pharmaceutical products.

Aseptic Services

- Participate in the Aseptic Dispensing Service under supervision, performing necessary assembly and monitoring tasks.

General Responsibilities

- Maintain adequate supplies of pharmacy consumables and assist in training less experienced colleagues.

- Engage in ongoing training relevant to the pharmacy service.

Qualifications and Experience

Desirable Qualifications

  • Good general education, preferably with Mathematics and English at GCSE level or equivalent.
  • Training to NVQ2 level or equivalent, which will be provided.

Desirable Experience

  • Recent experience in a healthcare setting or customer service industry.
