Role: Clinical Informatics Specialist

Band: 8a - Permanent Position

We are looking for a highly skilled Clinical Informatics Specialist to join our team. This pivotal role involves providing expert clinical pharmacy insights into the Electronic Patient Record (EPR) system across the organization, contributing to both operational and strategic advancements. The successful candidate will leverage their specialized clinical expertise to aid in the development of innovative workflows with electronic systems, ensuring the highest standards of safety and quality. Additionally, they will advocate for new operational methodologies and identify any clinical risks associated with the transition to future systems, collaborating closely with colleagues.

Key Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities:

  • Deliver specialized clinical pharmacy expertise to enhance the EPR system across the organization, supporting both operational and strategic initiatives.
  • Utilize clinical knowledge to assist in the design and implementation of new electronic workflows, ensuring optimal safety and quality standards.
  • Promote innovative practices and report any clinical risks that may arise during the transition to new systems, working in partnership with IT colleagues.
  • Support the provision of clinical medicines management services as necessary.

Informatics Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the implementation, maintenance, and development of the EPR system.
  • Support back-end technical processes, including configuration, development, and testing of current and future EPR systems.
  • Facilitate training for all staff involved in the EPR process, including pharmacy personnel, prescribers, and nursing staff.
  • Collaborate with IT Systems management to address issues and ensure the EPR system meets operational needs.
  • Promote the benefits of the EPR system and ensure effective and safe implementation.
  • Engage with clinical leaders and pharmacy management to develop and maintain Pharmacy IT policies and strategies.
  • Stay informed about updates and safety alerts related to the EPR system and national guidance.
  • Lead audits and reporting on medication and system utilization using EPR reporting tools.
  • Support the development and approval of new forms/templates in line with guidelines.
  • Identify opportunities for enhancing pharmacy services and assist in preparing business cases.
  • Participate in relevant user group meetings at local and national levels.
  • Collaborate with pharmacy management on operational IT service delivery.
  • Generate monthly reports utilizing EPR data as required.
  • Network with other pharmacy informatics professionals to share best practices.

Clinical Pharmacy and Medicines Optimization:

  • Provide specialized clinical services to designated ward areas in accordance with professional and departmental policies.
  • Compile drug histories and review prescribed medications for safety and efficacy.
  • Develop and update individual pharmaceutical care plans based on clinical responses and investigations.
  • Monitor and interpret clinical tests to optimize drug therapy.
  • Stay updated on new drug developments and contribute to drug submissions for safe and effective treatment.
  • Conduct therapeutic drug monitoring and develop evidence-based treatment protocols.
  • Implement local and national guidelines as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with medical and nursing staff to ensure correct medication prescribing and administration.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and consultant ward rounds.
  • Investigate medication-related incidents and implement strategies to minimize future risks.
  • Conduct clinical audits within the pharmacy department and clinical areas.
  • Engage with healthcare professionals to ensure effective medicine use across the health economy.
  • Monitor inpatient and discharge prescriptions for accuracy and cost-effectiveness.
  • Assess patient responses to therapy and adjust drug doses as necessary.
  • Advise on therapeutic drug monitoring to ensure optimal treatment.
  • Report adverse drug reactions in line with national guidelines.
  • Document clinical interventions in accordance with local policy.
  • Educate patients on their medications and promote adherence to treatment protocols.
  • Participate in drug utilization and clinical audit activities.
  • Initiate investigations into pharmaceutical product issues and develop new service delivery methods.

Managerial Responsibilities:

  • Supervise pharmacists undertaking clinical pharmacy diplomas as necessary.
  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures aligned with Trust objectives.
  • Promote a visible pharmacy practice profile at local, regional, and national levels.

Education and Training:

  • Participate in the clinical training and mentoring of pre-registration pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
  • Provide assessments and testimonials for pre-registration pharmacists.
  • Train medical, nursing, and other staff in medicines management.
  • Contribute to in-house clinical meetings and pharmacy audits.
  • Engage in continuing professional development and mandatory training as required.

General Duties:

  • Maintain high standards of work and promote the professional image of pharmacy.
  • Ensure compliance with safe working systems and legal requirements.
  • Participate in weekend and holiday duties as required.
  • Provide on-call services as necessary, ensuring timely advice and information.
  • Maintain security of pharmacy department keys and equipment.
  • Perform manual handling tasks as required.

Essential and Desirable Criteria:

Essential:

  • Vocational Master's degree in Pharmacy or equivalent.
  • Pre-registration training and experience.
  • Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • Completed or pursuing a postgraduate diploma/MSc in clinical pharmacy.
  • Post-registration experience in a busy hospital or equivalent.
  • Analytical skills for evaluating prescribing documentation and clinical systems.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational skills.

Desirable:

  • Independent Non-medical Prescribing Qualification or commitment to training.
  • Experience in a specialist field (Informatics/EPMA/EPR).
