Position Overview

The Childhood Wellness Nurse will deliver comprehensive and effective weight management strategies aimed at assisting severely overweight children and their guardians who have been identified through national health initiatives, ensuring that care is based on evidence and that safe intervention levels are maintained.

Key Responsibilities

The individual in this role will manage a caseload of children and adolescents where weight is a significant concern. The Childhood Wellness Nurse will guide parents/guardians, young individuals, and children towards healthier lifestyle choices and implement the Healthy Weight Program for their designated caseload.

The new appointee will also be expected to collaborate with the broader school health team and partner organizations to promote healthy weight among children and adolescents while fulfilling our legal responsibilities regarding safeguarding.

This position offers a unique opportunity to enhance your expertise in policy and strategy, caseload management, and multidisciplinary collaboration, all while positively impacting the health and wellbeing of children and adolescents in the community.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Qualifications

  • First level Registered Nurse (Adult/Child)
  • Specialist Community Public Health Nurse qualification [SN/HV]

Desirable Qualifications

  • Evidence of post-registration education and training in a related field

  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development
  • Proven experience in delivering health promotion and educational programs

Desirable Experience

  • Experience working within child safeguarding frameworks
  • Experience providing weight management support to children and their guardians

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to utilize evidence-based practices and evaluate standards, providing clinical guidance and support to staff
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities and understanding of professional responsibilities within a team
  • Capacity to establish and maintain key relationships with colleagues and other disciplines
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to facilitate and support the implementation of service development within a team

Knowledge and Understanding

Essential Knowledge

  • In-depth knowledge of health and social care policies related to children's services, including safeguarding
  • Comprehensive understanding of national and local strategies related to the Healthy Child Programme and obesity management
  • Knowledge of issues surrounding weight management and healthy lifestyles
  • Familiarity with health promotion and public health principles
  • Understanding of conflict resolution and management of challenging situations
