London, Greater London, United Kingdom Ministry of Defence Full time

Job Overview

The mission of the Air Capability and Programmes division is to develop the essential elements of air-power and enhance our abilities to achieve targeted operational outcomes across various scenarios as needed.

The Programme Management Office, situated within the Air Capability and Programmes at Air Command, plays a pivotal role in facilitating the execution of the Air Mobility and Air Enablers sub-Portfolio. Air Command offers a welcoming work environment, conveniently located with reliable public transport options and amenities such as free parking, a subsidised gym, a convenience store, and a dedicated coffee shop.

This position presents an exciting opportunity to join the Programme Management Office (PMO) as a Project Support Officer, where you will assist the Programme Manager in the successful delivery of Air Capability Programmes. The role includes the flexibility to work remotely and travel to various UK locations for work-related tasks.

This role is structured for a commitment of 37 hours per week.

Role Responsibilities

The Air Mobility and Air Enablers division oversees a diverse range of programmes, including capability enhancement, delivery, maintenance, and upgrades across the RAF Air Mobility Fleet, as well as pilot training capabilities and innovative solutions to enhance Aircrew performance.

The Project Support Officer's responsibilities encompass a wide array of tasks aimed at supporting the project's goals. This role is crucial for ensuring the seamless operation of the project by assisting the project manager with project management processes and coordinating business management actions and activities on their behalf.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing and/or managing PMO outputs such as Risks, Assumptions, Dependencies, Benefits, Stakeholder Engagement, Communications, Schedules, Lessons Learned, and Information.
  • Facilitating the governance meeting schedule for the programme, ensuring that meetings yield high-quality outputs that enable the Senior Responsible Owner to make informed decisions.
  • Supporting effective governance and decision-making processes, providing reporting, and engaging in mechanisms that hold the Programme Manager accountable for delivery.
  • Participating in assurance reviews and supporting the implementation of recommendations. Organising assurance processes such as gateway reviews as necessary.
  • Ensuring that effective Change Management processes are established to document and agree on changes to deliverables in collaboration with stakeholders.

This position offers an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience in Portfolio, Programme, and Project Management (P3M) across a varied portfolio, complemented by training opportunities that facilitate the attainment of professional P3M qualifications.

Candidate Profile

What We Are Looking For:

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A willingness to pursue qualifications in programme management, with training provided as necessary.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document meeting records and liaise with stakeholders effectively.
  • The ability to work collaboratively as part of a team while also being capable of working independently.
  • A commitment to delivering outputs within established timelines and adapting to changing demands as required.
  • A strong sense of pride in their work and a commitment to high standards.
  • A dedication to personal development and growth.
  • The flexibility to work from the office as well as remotely from other UK locations.

Behavioural Competencies

During the selection process, candidates will be assessed against the following behaviours:

  • Collaboration
  • Effective Communication and Influence
  • Timely Delivery
  • Quality Service Management
  • Decision-Making Skills

Employee Benefits

In addition to a competitive salary, the Ministry of Defence contributes significantly towards your membership in the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.

  • Tailored learning and development opportunities
  • Flexible working environment
  • A culture that promotes inclusion and diversity
  • Access to a cycle-to-work scheme
  • Generous annual leave policy, with 25 days of paid leave increasing to 30 days after five years of service, plus public holidays
  • Enhanced parental and adoption leave

Where feasible, some roles may allow for a combination of office and remote working arrangements. This is a non-contractual arrangement, and all office-based employees are expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in the office, subject to capacity and any necessary workplace adjustments.

The Ministry of Defence is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for its staff, including initiatives to promote a smoke-free workplace.

We may contact you regarding your experience to help us improve our recruitment process. Your participation in any feedback surveys will be voluntary and anonymous.
