The Lead Technical Operations Manager will be responsible for recruitment and training, managing schedules and budgets, coordinating with incoming teams, and maintaining technical equipment, systems, and safety protocols. As an integral member of our organization, you will have the chance to influence venue enhancements, participate in essential meetings, and uphold our core values.

Job Purpose
  • To effectively organize and supervise the technical team, ensuring top-notch technical execution for all performances and participatory work within our venue and, when applicable, alternative locations.
  • To maintain the technical and auditorium facilities to the highest standards.
  • To assist and act on behalf of the Head of Operations in relevant areas.
Key Task Areas:

Staff Management

  • Oversee the daily management and scheduling of technical staff, ensuring all events and setups are adequately staffed within budget and compliance with working time regulations.
  • Ensure clear communication with all technical personnel, disseminating tasks, systems, procedures, and responsibilities throughout the department.

Technical Administration

  • Collaborate with incoming teams, the Creative team, Head of Operations, and Customer Service to ensure smooth operations for all events, corporate bookings, creative learning activities, and performances.
  • Work alongside the Head of Operations to manage external contracts and contractor visits for technical and facility maintenance, services, and inspections.

Practical Delivery

  • Actively participate in performances and events, including lighting, sound, and audio-visual equipment operation, fulfilling the role of duty technician as needed.
  • Design lighting and sound for in-house productions and community users as required.

Essential Skills

Experience

  • Demonstrated experience in Stage, Electrics, and Sound
  • Proven background in a similar environment and in managing a team of technical personnel
  • Experience in the technical delivery of participatory and produced work
  • Technical liaison experience with visiting teams and community users

Knowledge/Qualifications

  • Familiarity with technical stage equipment
  • Understanding of touring company requirements and interpreting riders
  • Knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and other legislative requirements
  • Safe rigging and operation of electrics and sound equipment

Skills/Abilities

  • Proficient IT skills (Word, Excel)
  • Exceptional people management and staff deployment skills, capable of motivating a team to excel
  • Outstanding communication and organizational skills
  • Expertise in stage, rigging, sound, and/or electrics design
  • Ability to perform well under pressure
  • Strong attention to detail with problem-solving skills
  • Flexibility to work varied hours, including weekends and evenings

Desirable Skills
Experience

  • Experience working within a venue with a large and active participatory program
  • Experience in a producing theatre company and/or repertory theatre system

Knowledge/Qualifications

  • Experience with programming ETC EOS family consoles
  • Qlab programming experience
  • First Aid at Work certificate*
  • Valid driving license
  • Current electrical qualification
  • Knowledge of Artisan powered flying systems
  • Experience with digital projection equipment

Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to mix live sound/music during performances
  • Scenic construction skills
  • Lighting/Sound Design expertise
