Job Overview

The Ministry of Defence employs a substantial workforce, with the Army Top Level Budget (TLB) encompassing a diverse group of approximately 7,000 Civil Servants across various locations. Our team comprises professionals from multiple disciplines, including training, human resources, finance, project management, and policy development.

The Field Army Operational Research Branch (ORB), part of the British Army's Land Warfare Centre, utilizes analytical methodologies to enhance decision-making processes. Our team is responsible for conducting research, studies, war games, experiments, and providing scientific support in deployed environments. The Operational Analysis (OA) team plays a crucial role in supporting the Field Army during exercises and operations, employing mathematical and analytical techniques to facilitate military planning and problem-solving. This role significantly contributes to formation readiness and operational planning.

This position entails a commitment of 37 hours per week.

Role Responsibilities

As the Principal Operational Analyst, you will oversee the ORB's Operational Analysis Team and ensure the effective delivery of the Land OA program. This role requires collaboration with industry partners and various government colleagues. The OA program includes deployed Operational Analysis support and aims to expand its scope to address the needs of the Field Army. You will lead and manage deployed OA operations, utilizing the Land OA toolset, and may be required to deploy to operational theaters as necessary. Adaptability to field conditions, which may be challenging, is essential.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the Operational Research OA Team, including line management of SEO grade analysts.
  • Coordinating and managing contributions from external suppliers, ensuring effective project management and commercial oversight.
  • Developing, managing, and governing deployable tools and models, focusing on continuous improvement and engagement with Army HQs to meet operational demands.
  • Establishing and maintaining pre-deployment qualifications for the OA team, advising on training needs to ensure readiness for exercises and operations.
  • Demonstrating experience in program and project management, stakeholder engagement, and technical delivery, while representing HQ LWC in liaising with the Field Army.
  • Employing both qualitative and quantitative analytical methods, including statistical modeling and data visualization, to set best practices for the team and wider deployable analysts.
  • Participating in broader Operational Research studies and experimentation, applying technical skills to enhance the Land Operational Research capability.

Candidate Requirements

Essential criteria include:

  • A degree in a STEM subject.
  • Experience in team leadership or line management.
  • Proven impact through analysis in decision-making support.
  • Knowledge of Operational Research/Analysis techniques.
  • A valid UK driving license.

Desirable criteria include:

  • Experience in a military environment or with military clients.
  • Application of Operational Research/Analysis techniques.
  • Membership in a relevant professional body, such as The Operational Research Society.

Licenses and Qualifications

A valid UK driving license is required, along with a degree in a STEM subject.
