Healthcare Support Specialist in Primary Care

Position Overview

As a vital member of our clinical team, your primary responsibility will be to assist in the effective delivery of healthcare services to our patient population. You will operate under the indirect supervision of the clinical staff, undertaking various tasks and responsibilities as delegated. Collaboration with all members of the practice team is essential, and adherence to practice policies and procedures is expected. A flexible approach to your role within the practice is crucial, as you will work alongside other Multi-Disciplinary Team members (MDT).

Key Responsibilities

Your core duties will include:

  • Assisting the practice nurse with health promotion initiatives.
  • Conducting baseline assessments such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature, and pulse rate.
  • Facilitating routine and 24-hour blood pressure monitoring.
  • Performing wound care, dressing changes, and other clinical tasks as needed.
  • Supporting the management of chronic disease clinics alongside the practice nurse.
  • Conducting Body Mass Index (BMI) assessments.
  • Acting as a chaperone during patient consultations.
  • Carrying out venepuncture when trained.
  • Administering flu vaccinations upon completion of training.
  • Executing ear irrigation procedures under the supervision of the practice nurse when qualified.
  • Performing electrocardiograms (ECGs) as required.
  • Ensuring that specimens are accurately recorded and prepared for transportation.
  • Providing assistance during minor surgical procedures as necessary.
  • Maintaining clinical rooms to ensure they are well-stocked and ready for each session.
  • Regularly cleaning fridges in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Managing clinical waste disposal and replacing sharps bins as per the practice's infection prevention and control policy.
  • Completing clinical checks to a satisfactory standard as directed by the Lead Nurse.
  • Overseeing stock levels of medications and supplies, reordering as needed.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Engage in local initiatives aimed at improving service delivery and patient care.
  • Contribute to shared learning within the practice.
  • Assist with opening and closing procedures in accordance with the duty rota.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Healthcare qualification (level 3 or 4) or actively pursuing qualification.
  • Experience in a Primary Care setting.

Desirable

  • Phlebotomy certification.
  • Experience working with the public in a healthcare context.
