Position Overview

The Lung and Heart Day Unit is an evolving service dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and management of chronic medical conditions for cardiac and respiratory patients in a day case environment. Patients are referred to this unit for various procedures, including chest drain management, biologic treatments, immunoglobulin therapies administered either intravenously or subcutaneously, and cytotoxic therapies.

Our operational hours are Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 20:00, and we provide a comprehensive range of specialized services within the cardiac and respiratory nursing domain. This includes managing conditions such as pulmonary hypertension, adult congenital heart disease, post-operative care for thoracic and cardiac surgeries, interstitial lung disease, host defense disorders, cystic fibrosis, asthma and allergies, as well as lung failure, including sleep and ventilation support.

This role presents an excellent opportunity to collaborate with a dynamic team of specialists. Our multidisciplinary team comprises a Matron, Ward Sister, staff nurses at bands 5 and 6, healthcare assistants, a Practice Educator, specialist clinical nurse specialists, chest physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, dietitians, palliative care professionals, research nurses, psychologists, and esteemed consultants in their respective fields.

Key Responsibilities

At Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, you will have the chance to enhance your confidence and develop your clinical skills and knowledge in both cardiac and respiratory nursing. You will learn to effectively prioritize tasks and become an autonomous nurse, supporting ambulatory patients with their treatment and coordinating necessary investigations. Additionally, you will assist patients in learning how to administer their home intravenous and subcutaneous treatments.

Moreover, you will have the opportunity to cultivate clinical skills such as the insertion and management of intravenous lines, as well as managerial skills through a variety of in-house training programs, including leadership courses tailored to support your professional development and career pathway.

Candidate Profile

The unit is seeking a clinical nurse who embodies exceptional care values, possesses a strong sense of teamwork, and has relevant experience in respiratory and cardiac care. The emphasis is on delivering high-quality, patient-centered care. The ideal candidate will be a registered nurse with strong organizational, IT, and interpersonal skills, capable of managing a group of patients with complex needs.
