Department Overview

The Department of Psychology, established in 1952, is highly regarded in the UK for its exceptional teaching and research capabilities. Our research is organized into three main areas: Cognitive Neuroscience, Developmental Science, and Quantitative Social Psychology, with notable strengths in virtual reality, multisensory perception, and developmental psychology. Our facilities are state-of-the-art, including a dedicated motion capture lab and advanced equipment for various research methodologies.

Position Overview

We are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) for a fixed-term position within the Department of Psychology. The successful candidate will engage in a research project focused on developing a neurocognitive model of memory-guided visual attention, under the guidance of a Principal Investigator.

This project aims to deepen our understanding of the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying memory-guided visual attention. The role will involve combining behavioral and electrophysiological (EEG/ERP) methodologies to explore the characteristics of memory-based attentional templates and their selection processes. The candidate will have access to a fully equipped EEG laboratory to design and implement innovative experimental approaches.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Communicate complex research material effectively to diverse audiences through presentations and discussions, contributing to the dissemination of research findings in academic publications and conferences.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations on research outcomes to various stakeholders, including academic and non-academic audiences.
  • Produce high-quality research outputs, including manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations, under the supervision of the Principal Investigator.
  • Assist in formulating research objectives and proposals.
  • Conduct individual and collaborative research projects as directed.
  • Collect EEG data independently.
  • Collaborate with the research team to identify new research areas and develop innovative methodologies.
  • Address challenges impacting research goals by proposing creative solutions in consultation with the Principal Investigator.
  • Engage with colleagues and external contacts to foster collaborative research opportunities.
  • Manage personal research activities and resources effectively while contributing to project planning.
  • Provide training in research techniques to peers and students as appropriate.
  • Participate in student supervision and assist in evaluating student knowledge.
  • Contribute to a collegial and respectful working environment that promotes inclusivity.
  • Engage in broader departmental activities to support the discipline.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities, including teaching programs and departmental committees.
Employment Details

This position is fixed-term for 24 months, with funding available for the specified duration. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the advancement of the research project while developing their own research ideas.
