About the Role

The Council is responsible for the strategic direction of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, approving major developments and receiving regular reports from Executive Officers. As a Council member, you will play a key role in shaping the future of our institution and contributing to its mission to improve health and health equity worldwide.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic guidance and oversight to the institution
  • Approve major developments and receive regular reports from Executive Officers
  • Contribute to the Council's decision-making process
  • Represent the institution at external events and meetings
Requirements

We are looking for an individual with:

Strategic experience and expertise in the Higher Education SectorSenior management/director level organisational and people leadership skillsExecutive level experience of working in AfricaDesirable Attributes
  • Proven leadership skills gained through professional or volunteer roles
  • Strong personal commitment to the mission and objectives of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine
  • Collaborative skills and the ability to work as a member of a team
  • Understanding of the complexity of university governance and the strategic, political, and economic context of the institution
  • Tact and diplomacy, with the ability to listen and engage effectively
  • Strong networking capabilities that can be utilised for the benefit of the institution
  • Demonstrable commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion
Term of Office and Time Commitment

The nature of the role requires a commitment of time to prepare, attend, and actively participate in Council and committee meetings. The Council meets four times a year, and most of its committees meet four times a year.

Remuneration

This is a non-remunerated role that does not attract a salary or honorarium. Independent members of the Council and Committees will be able to reclaim all travelling and similar expenses incurred in the course of LSHTM business.
