Position Overview

An exceptional opportunity exists for a locum consultant specializing in lung medicine. This role encompasses 10 Programmed Activities per week, focusing on Acute Oncology and Lung Cancer management.

The selected candidate will be responsible for delivering 5 Programmed Activities dedicated to Acute Oncology care for inpatients within the Acute Assessment Unit. The organization provides inpatient services for specific non-elective admissions primarily related to the patient's underlying malignancy or its treatment. All patients admitted are already receiving oncology care.

Additionally, the consultant will allocate 5 Programmed Activities to support Lung Cancer services, which includes participation in outpatient clinics and conducting ward rounds on a weekly basis.

Key Responsibilities

The consultant will play a pivotal role in supporting the organization in delivering inpatient services for selected non-elective admissions. The admissions are primarily related to the patient's malignancy or its treatment, with the normal admission route being through a dedicated 24-hour hotline that triages patients appropriately.

The consultant's responsibilities include:

  • Providing leadership and coordination for junior medical staff in the Acute Assessment Unit.
  • Liaising with the oncology team to ensure patients are thoroughly assessed and managed during their inpatient stay.
  • Facilitating timely progression of management plans and preparing patients for discharge to prevent unnecessary delays.
  • Conducting daily ward rounds on the Acute Assessment Unit, with contributions from the multidisciplinary team.
  • Offering supervision, education, and support to junior doctors in their inpatient duties.
  • Delivering outpatient clinics at the main site and potentially covering peripheral sites as needed.

Job Planning and Review

Essential Qualifications

  • MRCP or equivalent qualification.
  • GMC registration with a license to practice.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing oncology patients independently.
  • Evidence of contributions to teaching and clinical governance.
