Position Overview

Finance Business Support Associate

This pivotal position is essential for the success of both the Divisions and the overall organization. The individual in this role is expected to operate at a high level within the organization, demonstrating credibility with Divisional Management teams, Heads of Service, and Clinicians across all tiers.

Reporting directly to the Finance Business Partner, the incumbent will be responsible for the following key areas:

  • Compiling and delivering a monthly Management Accounts Package to the Finance Business Partner and budget holders, accompanied by a detailed commentary on the monthly financial statements.
  • Developing, producing, and maintaining budget reports and other spreadsheet-based analyses in line with established timelines and departmental policies.
  • Generating monthly variance analyses for specific departments within a division, probing any discrepancies from the budget and identifying strategies for mitigation.
  • Engaging regularly with budget holders to provide insights and analyses regarding their financial allocations.
  • Assisting all relevant budget holders in the formulation of their annual plans, including the provision of analytical support and forecasts.
  • Offering guidance and support to budget holders on potential areas for efficiency and productivity enhancements.

Core Responsibilities

  • Serve as a Business Partner to the directorates, delivering financial insights and expert counsel during Directorate Review Meetings and to Directorate Managers, as well as to the Trust Executive Team when necessary. Present complex, sensitive, and contentious information (both financial and non-financial) to the Division, and regularly share performance data at Divisional and specialty management meetings.
  • Generate monthly management accounts that maintain integrity and support each Directorate in achieving their financial goals.
  • Act as the primary support for the Finance Business Partner on all aspects of financial management within the Division, in collaboration with the Divisional Operations team.
  • Assist the Finance Business Partner in enhancing connections between activity, capacity, and expenditure, to develop Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that inform decision-making and financial planning.
  • Provide ongoing advice to budget holders on managing and comprehending their expenditure variances, ensuring that corrective actions agreed upon by the Division and individuals are executed within the established timelines.

Candidate Profile

Qualifications

Essential

  • Evidence of Continuous Professional Development (CPD).
  • A first degree or equivalent qualification.

Desirable

  • CCAB fully qualified accountant with substantial experience in financial management within a large organization and a member of a professional body.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to cultivate robust working relationships with a diverse range of Trust staff, managers, and Directors.
  • Capability to manage large, complex budgets and provide financial guidance to non-financial managers in a comprehensible manner.
  • Proficiency in creating, manipulating, and presenting highly complex spreadsheets, with the ability to effectively communicate the derived information.
  • Excellent analytical and technical accounting skills.

Desirable

  • Experienced user of Financial Reporting Systems.

Experience

Essential

  • In-depth understanding of the current NHS agenda and challenges, along with the NHS financial framework.
  • Expertise in advising on the management of large, complex budgets and providing financial counsel to non-financial managers in a clear and authoritative manner.
  • Advanced knowledge of management accounting techniques and relevant Financial Reporting Standards.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the NHS and its financial framework, as well as NHS service delivery.

Desirable

  • Evidence of experience working within a Foundation Trust.
