Our work plays a crucial role in advancing the global net-zero energy strategy, presenting unique challenges that will expand your capabilities and inspire innovative thinking.

Our engineers work across various domains, including transmission and distribution networks, substation design, and renewable energy (photovoltaics, battery storage), while also offering technical advisory services for a diverse range of industrial clients. We support our leading Critical Systems division with hyper-scale data centers and collaborate with our Building Services teams on major construction initiatives. We prioritize skill development and professional excellence in a proactive, collaborative environment.

We set ourselves apart from industry competitors through our integrated approach at Cundall, seamlessly combining the often disconnected elements of power system design with simulation studies, all within a multidisciplinary context. This unique methodology enables us to excel in delivering high-quality solutions for complex and challenging projects.

The Role

As a Senior Power Systems Engineer, you will address some of the most engaging engineering projects globally. Your responsibilities will include designing medium and high voltage power systems, utilizing industry-standard software for analysis and validation, drafting technical reports, and mentoring junior team members. You will also lead enhancements in project delivery methods while managing the execution of small to medium projects through your commitment to precise and innovative power systems design and strong collaborative and problem-solving skills.

Project Themes:
  1. Substation Design: Participate in pre-FEED/FEED design of grid substations and hyper-scale data center campuses (100MW+), focusing on system design principles and equipment selection.
  2. Grid Connections: Design grid interconnections for renewable projects, ensuring adherence to UK grid codes.
  3. Technical Advisory: Act as an independent reviewer/owner's engineer for data centers and utility clients.
  4. Niche Projects: Engage in innovative protection and control designs, city master planning, and the deployment of novel technologies.
This role is based at one of our Power Systems hubs in the UK. At Cundall, we offer flexible working arrangements, allowing you to balance office and remote work, along with various other benefits.

Responsibilities
  • Develop comprehensive engineering designs, calculations, and specifications using relevant technical software.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports, specifications, drawings, schematics, and other design documents throughout different stages of project lifecycles.
  • Model complex networks and conduct steady state studies (load-flow, short-circuit, protection coordination, arc flash), dynamic/transient simulation, and harmonic analysis to validate and verify developed designs.
  • Define, refine, and lead the delivery of specific work packages assigned by the project lead, while coordinating input/workstreams from other disciplines as necessary.
  • Supervise, mentor, and review the work of junior colleagues.
  • Communicate and collaborate with stakeholders, suppliers, contractors, vendors, and clients in a professional manner within a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment.
  • Participate in and lead (when required) client and project meetings.
  • Identify and develop improvements in project delivery methodologies.
The Skills
  • Degree in Power Systems Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Chartered engineer (or working towards) with a recognized institution.
  • Experience in an Electrical Engineering role within the power systems sector, preferably in consultancy or an OEM/equipment vendor environment, delivering grid substation or renewable projects.
  • Familiarity with UK DNO/TO design standards and requirements above 33kV.

  • Experience in one of the following at 33kV or above:
    • Substation Primary Design (FEED/Detailed)
    • Substation Secondary Design (FEED/Detailed)
    • HV Plant Design (FEED/Detailed)
  • Strong communicator with excellent stakeholder management skills.
Desirable Skills
  • Proficiency with power systems analysis software (e.g., DIgSILENT Power Factory, ETAP, or SKM-PTW).
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD or equivalent design tools is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of UK/European Grid Codes and grid compliance studies is beneficial.
