Job Overview

Position Summary

Key Responsibilities

The position is for a Senior Power Systems Engineer at GE Vernova's Wide Area Monitoring, Protection and Control (WAMPAC) Centre of Excellence. Our mission is to tackle the climate crisis through pioneering monitoring and control technologies that facilitate a zero-carbon electricity grid. By leveraging our solutions, power system operators are enhancing grid flexibility to incorporate a greater share of low-carbon energy sources while improving their ability to identify and mitigate stability and security threats.

Our team operates across the entire spectrum from substations to control centers, focusing on power system dynamics, stability, control, and performance. This includes instrumentation, monitoring & analytics, control systems, and modeling. We collaborate closely with clients to create innovative solutions for emerging challenges, design and implement monitoring software, control systems, and analytical applications. Additionally, we offer consulting services related to power system performance, model validation, and stability diagnostics.

We seek engineers who are dedicated to transforming the power system landscape, possess a deep understanding of low-carbon energy complexities, and can apply innovative strategies to drive change.

Essential Duties

As a senior member of our dynamic Power Systems team within the collaborative WAMPAC CoE, you will take a leading role in researching and designing solutions for core WAMPAC products and their integration with related physical and software systems, including Energy Management Systems and stability assessment tools. You will also act as a technical lead on projects, providing consulting and delivery services to clients, and working closely with them to resolve power system challenges and advance the future of WAMPAC products.
  • Provide technical leadership on projects, collaborating with clients to deliver WAMPAC solutions, including training, analysis, workshops, and operational service introductions.
  • Act as a primary liaison with clients, understanding their needs, identifying opportunities, and communicating these to our Power Systems, Software Engineering, Project Management, and Commercial teams.
  • Contribute to the design and development of core Wide Area Monitoring Systems (WAMS) and Wide Area Protection and Control products, including algorithms and performance requirements.
  • Conduct analysis and studies as part of consultancy services, utilizing model-based static and dynamic analysis, as well as measurement-based studies.
  • Facilitate knowledge transfer and support for clients on ongoing projects to enhance product utilization, gather feedback, and identify potential follow-on business.
  • Provide technical support during the sales process, including pre-sales presentations, pilot projects, and addressing customer challenges.
  • Prepare technical reports, papers, and presentations for conferences and publications.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% for client interactions and project meetings.
Qualifications/Requirements
  • MSc or PhD in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience, preferably with a focus on Power System Operations, Dynamics, Transients, Stability, and/or Control.
  • Basic understanding and experience with power system modeling tools.
  • Fluency in English with effective communication skills for teleconferences and face-to-face meetings.
  • Ability to learn quickly, with a willingness to expand knowledge in new areas and conduct thorough research.
  • Strong communication skills to convey complex concepts verbally, visually, and in writing.
  • Capability to solve problems holistically and work both independently and collaboratively.
  • A commitment to developing leadership skills.
Desirable Experience
  • Familiarity with Matlab/Simulink and programming languages such as Python.
  • Experience in power system analysis using industry-standard tools like PSCAD, PSS/E, DigSILENT PowerFactory, or Powertech DSATools.
  • Knowledge of RTDS or OPAL-RT environments.
  • Experience with network management products, including SCADA EMS/DMS and WAMS solutions.
  • Understanding of basic concepts in Power Electronics and control capabilities.
  • Experience in utility or industrial settings, particularly in power system operations, planning, or analysis.
