Position Overview

Objective

Food plays a pivotal role in our offerings, and as the Food Strategy Manager, you will be tasked with designing and enhancing our diverse food offerings within our travel retail locations. Your goal will be to ensure our product range is optimal and future-ready, leveraging various models from curating exceptional brands under the WHSmith banner to managing our food collaborations with partners such as M&S and Costa.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establishing the framework for our food offerings and determining the conditions for their implementation, including identifying gaps in our current range and proposing solutions. Current offerings include our proprietary WHSmith sandwiches alongside various branded FTG products; The Coffee House brand; M&S – Implants and full franchise; Costa – from Costa express to full franchise.
  • Enhancing our brand's reputation in the food sector through proposition development and nurturing relationships with both brand partners and landlords.
  • Analyzing the profitability of our various food offerings in travel retail to ensure we are maximizing our product range in each location.
  • Utilizing diverse sources to stay informed about customer trends and competitor offerings, ensuring we remain leaders in the FTG market. This information will be interpreted and applied to initiate and influence new propositions that will enrich our customer experience.
  • Engaging and securing support from key stakeholders and teams to continually improve our food offerings, particularly collaborating closely with the Business Development team as the FTG Subject Matter Expert regarding existing and potential new partnerships that will enhance our offerings across different locations.
  • Defining our future coffee and breakfast offerings, including key food solutions for peak times, with the potential for hot food to unlock opportunities in more locations, along with recommendations on which offerings to implement in each site.
  • Collaborating with the Business Development team to establish a 24-hour food solution within hospital settings, maximizing the potential of our food offerings within vending machines.
  • Guiding and supporting workstreams through to completion, ensuring our food vision is realized.
  • Ensuring that all changes are evaluated, successes are communicated, improvements are implemented, and lessons learned are applied to future offerings.

Candidate Profile:

  • Experience in food service is advantageous.
  • A passion for food with prior experience in food procurement or category management.
  • Ability to perform under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and navigate ambiguity.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, capable of building robust relationships and influencing at all levels, both internally and with external partners and landlords.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey messages clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Commercially savvy; technically proficient and able to work independently while taking accountability.
