Position Overview

As a Radiology Nursing Specialist, you will play a crucial role in supporting the Radiology team, which includes Radiology Assistants, Radiographers, Radiologists, and other essential personnel within the department.

Your responsibilities will involve providing care across multiple facilities, ensuring seamless support during various invasive procedures, including elective, diagnostic, and therapeutic interventions across all modalities.

You will be tasked with admitting, evaluating, and assisting both patients and their families throughout their experience in the Radiology department.

Key Responsibilities

Your primary duties will include:

  • Admitting and assessing patients prior to and following elective, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures within a Day Case Unit.
  • Assisting and scrubbing alongside the Radiologist in Interventional Rooms during all procedures.
  • Monitoring patients throughout procedures and acting as a circulating Nurse, ensuring that both the scrub person and Radiologist have the necessary equipment.
  • Once competencies are achieved, you will receive further training in airway management with conscious sedation.
  • Participating in the on-call team, covering one weekday per week and one in four weekends.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care for patients and their families independently, based on your level of competency.
  • Interpreting complex clinical information and responding to changes promptly, developing specialized care plans for radiology patients.
  • Following training to scrub for all diagnostic and interventional procedures.
  • Incorporating health education into your clinical practice.
  • Utilizing effective communication skills to engage with patients and their families, fostering collaboration within the multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrating a patient-centered approach to care.
  • Expanding your role through training and supervision to meet the clinical needs of the unit.
  • Recognizing your limitations and seeking support for professional development.
  • Contributing to the development and evaluation of specialist protocols and guidelines.
  • Participating in research projects within the clinical area.
  • Efficiently planning and prioritizing your workload for a group of patients.
  • Responding promptly to emergencies and maintaining control while assisting patients and junior staff.
  • Reporting adverse incidents in accordance with local policy.
  • Ensuring safe storage, cleaning, and operation of equipment according to Trust policies.
  • Adhering to COSHH and Infection Control guidelines to prevent cross-infection.
  • Demonstrating dexterity and attention to detail in preparing specialist equipment for procedures.
  • Utilizing resources effectively and maintaining stock levels for disposables and drugs.
  • Supporting and supervising junior staff and students as required.
  • Maintaining accurate patient records while ensuring confidentiality.
  • Establishing good communication channels with wards and departments to enhance patient care.
  • Accessing and interpreting computer data entries while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Demonstrating the ability to concentrate and apply attention to detail consistently.
  • Following Trust policy regarding the management of patients' property and valuables.
  • Supporting quality initiatives within the clinical area and evaluating patient outcomes.
  • Applying research-based practice to positively influence patient care.
  • Adhering to the NMC Code of Professional Practice.

Professional Development

  • Demonstrating a commitment to ongoing professional development and maintaining registration in line with NMC requirements.
  • Completing mandatory study days as required by the Trust.
  • Participating in Individual Performance Reviews and developing personal development plans with support from mentors.
  • Completing unit assessments and competencies within agreed timeframes.
  • Contributing to nurse education programs within the Radiology Directorate.
  • Acting as a mentor to both undergraduate and post-basic students and junior nurses.
  • Staying informed about developments affecting nursing practice.
  • Utilizing opportunities for clinical supervision and coaching.
