Position Overview

We are seeking two dedicated Library Support Specialists to become integral members of our team at the House of Lords Library. In this role, you will collaborate with the Library team to ensure the effective management of the Library's collections, resources, and systems. The successful candidates will provide precise and timely information to Members and other patrons at the Library's information desk.

This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in various aspects of professional library duties, including cataloguing, classification, acquisition, selection, and weeding. You will primarily work with a contemporary book collection while also having the chance to engage with and learn about the Library's special collections.

The roles will involve utilizing multiple modules of the Library Management System (Koha) and engaging with the administrative functionalities of other systems, including Ebook Central, Summon, and Aspen.

Key Responsibilities

  • Producing accurate, consistent, and relevant records based on a thorough understanding of RDA, AACR2, LCSH, DDC23, and MARC21; assisting in the development of appropriate policies and practices related to these standards.
  • Creating, maintaining, and deleting the Library's journal control records as necessary, as well as cataloguing both print and electronic journals; providing support to staff responsible for journal check-ins and maintenance.
  • Managing the creation, maintenance, and deletion of the Library's acquisition records, including placing orders with suppliers, processing invoices, and maintaining expenditure records using both the Library Management System (Koha) and other tools (primarily Excel, Outlook, and SharePoint).
  • Evaluating and selecting printed and online publications for acquisition in accordance with policy guidelines, as directed by the Collections Development Manager.
  • Monitoring collection usage data and gathering feedback from Library users; reviewing and making recommendations regarding the retention and disposal of items in the Library's collections as needed.
  • Providing service to Members and other users at the Library Information Desk, which includes answering information/reference inquiries, managing book loans, and assisting with the use of Library resources (including evening duties if required, for which an allowance is payable).

  • Comprehensive knowledge of parliament, politics, and current affairs, with the ability to uphold political impartiality.
  • A CILIP accredited degree or postgraduate qualification in a Library and Information Science related discipline or equivalent.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience in library acquisitions work.
  • Experience in reference inquiry work.
  • Familiarity with national cataloguing developments.
  • Understanding of collection development issues.
  • Experience working with journals, including journal cataloguing.
