We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Research Assistant to join our team at Ocean Science Consulting Limited. As a Research Assistant, you will play a key role in supporting our scientists and researchers in the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data related to marine science and environmental monitoring.
Key Responsibilities- Assist in the preparation and submission of peer-reviewed papers to scientific journals on behalf of our Chief Scientist and other senior scientists.
- Handle peer-reviewer comments from journals and provide feedback to our researchers.
- Conduct first-pass peer-reviewing of other workers' scientific papers on behalf of our Managing Director and Chief Scientist.
- Perform scientific literature reviews and provide summaries to our research team.
- Prepare and manage data, including data entry and statistical analysis.
- Develop and maintain databases using Microsoft Excel and other software.
- Analyze biological datasets and perform statistical modeling using techniques such as Generalized Additive Models (GAM) and Generalized Linear Models (GLM).
- Analyze Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) footage and other marine data.
- Generate figures and visualizations for presentations, reports, and publications.
- Develop and maintain maps using QGIS.
- Organize research materials and sources from journals and repositories.
- Enter publications into referencing software and generate bibliographies.
- Assist in the development of content for social media, websites, and other marketing materials.
- Legally permitted to work in the UK prior to employment.
- Degree in a relevant discipline, such as environmental science or marine biology.
- Offshore fieldwork experience, preferably in marine mammal or environmental monitoring.
- Excellent written, numerical, and verbal communication skills.
- High-level knowledge of Microsoft products, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
- Able to work independently and prioritize tasks effectively to meet deadlines.
- Genuine interest in the business and industry.
- Commercially aware and able to handle sensitive information.
- Knowledge and experience of environmental surveys, including water and sediment sampling.
- Published previously in a peer-reviewed journal.
- Experience with stock control and testing of PAM and other oceanographic equipment.
- Potential to work offshore as a Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) and PAM Operator.
- Day-to-day administration experience.
- MMO and PAM training.
- Offshore survival certifications, such as BOSIET and medical.
- Full, clean UK driver's license.
