The Night Operations Team Leader role is an excellent opportunity for those looking to enhance their leadership capabilities while guiding a dedicated management team and department. Your leadership background may come from any customer-centric sector, not exclusively from Food Retail. We are eager to cultivate diverse perspectives to develop a management team that functions effectively throughout the store. Therefore, if you lack specific technical expertise, do not be concerned; we primarily seek individuals who are driven to succeed through their teams and have a passion for engaging with customers.

Key Responsibilities

Our mission is fueled by our enthusiasm for food, and together we strive to serve and assist every customer.

You will operate in one of our most dynamic and intricate stores, reporting directly to the Store Manager while leading a team of managers. The environment is fast-paced, and each day will present unforeseen challenges. You may not always have immediate solutions – that’s acceptable – but by addressing short-term issues and implementing medium-term adjustments, you will empower your team to continue delivering excellence.

Our Night Operations teams are essential to ensuring our stores are prepared for the first customers of the day. They restock shelves, manage warehouse deliveries, and assist with overnight online order fulfillment. As a leader, you will maintain communication with the daytime leadership team to stay informed about ongoing plans and priorities, ensuring everything is ready for our colleagues and customers in the morning.

We understand that night work is not suitable for everyone, and an additional annual premium of up to £4,500 is available for eligible night management positions.

Specifically, your role involves setting the strategic direction for your area over the next 1-3 months.

• You will coach, motivate, and guide your managers to collaborate effectively, enhancing their skills and leading them through transitions.


• You will excel at helping your team empathize with customers, taking genuine pride in delivering superior service and identifying opportunities.


• You will lead through effective communication, clearly conveying performance metrics and inspiring improvements for the present and future.


• You will confidently prioritize tasks and energize your team throughout the night.


• You will develop your expertise in operations and serve as a role model for your team.


• You will make swift decisions and feel empowered and accountable for managing your area of the store, as well as stepping in for the Store Manager when necessary.

About You

You may currently oversee a smaller supermarket or convenience store, or you might already be in a team leadership position. Perhaps you are seeking a new challenge after a career break or transitioning from another large retail environment or sector. Regardless of your current situation, you have demonstrated your ability to make a positive impact and enjoy being part of a team.

Career Progression

By joining Sainsbury's in-store management teams, you will receive support and the opportunity to achieve excellence. Upon joining, you will undergo a comprehensive induction and orientation, along with a tailored training plan developed in collaboration with your manager. They will support and coach you to deliver outstanding performance while allowing ample time for your development.

As one of our Lead Managers, you could advance to a Deputy Store Manager or Store Manager position. You will also be well-positioned for leadership opportunities at our head office or within the Sainsbury's family, including Habitat, Tu, Argos, Sainsbury's Bank, and Nectar 360.
