Sterile Services Maintenance Technician

Chertsey, Surrey, United Kingdom Ashford & St. Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Position Overview

This position is responsible for executing maintenance, validation, testing, and servicing of various decontamination apparatus, including washer disinfectors, sterilizers, endoscope washer disinfectors, and ultrasonic devices. The role includes generating reports post-verification to present to the appropriate authorities and users utilizing TQSoft / IPReports.

The primary responsibility of the Technician is to leverage their expertise and advanced training to effectively allocate resources within the department for the completion of tasks and activities. It is essential for the Technician to understand resource limitations and availability to optimize task execution.

Collaboration with clinical colleagues is crucial to gain a thorough understanding of both engineering and clinical risks associated with identified issues, enabling informed advice to works officers regarding task prioritization and resource allocation.

Occasionally, the Technician may be required to directly engage in maintenance tasks and activities, providing updates on progress, challenges, and relevant information to ensure the department operates efficiently and meets its requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the broader Estates team by conducting assessments of task requirements from both clinical and non-clinical perspectives.
  • Offer technical guidance, expertise, and interpretation.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs independently as per your trade qualifications when necessary.
  • Execute tasks as delegated by Works officers, Scheduler, or Helpdesk, while collaborating effectively with other trades and offering assistance when needed.
  • Oversee contractors, including drafting specifications and conducting quality assurance or clerk of works activities.
  • Engage in continuous professional development and training to enhance skills, capabilities, and knowledge in crafts and engineering.
  • Mentor and support craftspersons in their roles, fostering their development for future technician positions.
  • Supervise the training and development of apprentices, ensuring they gain relevant experience in their primary and secondary trades for effective progression.

Job Requirements

The craftsperson is expected to maintain comprehensive knowledge of all procedures related to their trade and departmental operations. A minimum of a level 3 trade qualification is required, along with a level 2 qualification in a complementary trade (Electrical/Mechanical or Mechanical/Electrical).

Significant experience as a tradesperson is essential. Additionally, the craftsperson must complete training and be appointed as a competent person in two disciplines (e.g., medical gases and ventilation) and maintain all qualifications throughout employment.

Familiarity with the safe and proper use of tools and equipment is crucial, as is awareness of new tools and practices relevant to the organization. Mandatory annual training is required, and the Technician must ensure time is allocated for this.

The craftsperson will conduct and review various risk assessments and implement safety protocols. Effective communication of technical issues and safety requirements to the team and organization is vital.

Planning and scheduling of works that may cause significant disruptions, as well as coordinating contractors and in-house teams, are also key aspects of the role. Autonomy is a significant component, with a mix of scheduled and reactive work requiring self-management of time.
