About the Role

The British Museum is seeking a highly skilled Collections Conservator to join its team. As a key member of the Department of Collection Care, you will play a crucial role in the care and preservation of the Museum's vast collection.

Key Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the care of the collection through a combination of interventive and preventive measures, in support of the Museum's operating plan.
  • Proactively engage with the Public Programme activities of the Department of Collection Care.
  • Advise on conditions and prepare objects for loans, exhibitions, and permanent display.
  • Devise and undertake projects for the care of the collections in store.
  • Care for the collection through research, documentation, surveys, data collection, analysis, and support at public events.
  • Proactively engage with the department's outreach activities through public speaking and publication.
Requirements
  • Recognised professional conservation qualification to degree level or equivalent.
  • Experience with the conservation of the material relevant to the specialism of the role.
  • Understanding of mechanisms involved in material deterioration.
  • Knowledge of contemporary principles and practice in preventive conservation.
  • Understanding of conservation theory and ethical decision making.
  • Pass a colour vision test.
  • Good computing skills and proficiency with a range of IT systems, including documentation including digital imaging/scanning, etc.
  • Specific Knowledge in Metals conservation (Desirable).
  • Working towards PACR accreditation (Desirable).
