About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to lead our Preventive Conservation team at the National History Museum. As the Head of Collections Protection, you will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to protect our vast natural history collections, comprising over 80 million specimens.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement preventive conservation strategies to protect our collections from deterioration and damage
  • Lead a team of Preventive Conservators in Integrated Pest Management, Environmental Monitoring, Salvage planning, Policy and Reporting
  • Collaborate with cross-museum teams to ensure the collections are preserved for future generations
  • Manage and maintain the collections' environmental conditions to prevent damage and deterioration
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for the protection of the collections
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to colleagues on preventive conservation practices

About You

We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced professional with a strong background in preventive conservation. You will have a deep understanding of contemporary principles and practices in preventive conservation, as well as a strong understanding of mechanisms involved in material deterioration.

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in a relevant field, such as conservation, museum studies, or a related field
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in preventive conservation, with a strong background in natural history collections
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing effective preventive conservation strategies
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with colleagues at all levels
  • Ability to lead and manage a team of Preventive Conservators
