This is a temporary role with a duration of six months, offering a pathway for professional growth for those aspiring to leadership.

We are seeking a clinically proficient midwife with extensive midwifery experience and outstanding clinical skills to oversee our inpatient maternity team. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership capabilities and possess excellent communication and networking skills, essential for guiding the maternity team towards excellence.

The successful candidate must be self-driven, passionate, and committed to enhancing maternity services, with a focus on continuous improvement in safety and patient experience.

The role entails ensuring the delivery of high-quality care within maternity services, including the Delivery Suite, Antenatal/Postnatal ward, and Maternity Assessment Units.

This position requires a commitment of five days a week, including on-call responsibilities.

Main Responsibilities

The post holder will ensure that the highest standards of maternity care are consistently provided to women and their families, delivering a safe and effective midwifery service.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing dynamic leadership and direction to manage the service efficiently, ensuring that both quality and budgetary goals are achieved.
  • Maintaining a supportive working environment that enables staff to maximize their potential and enhance their clinical skills.
  • Being a visible presence across all relevant departments, offering guidance to staff, patients, and their families.
  • Collaborating with other Matrons within the Trust to contribute to the development and achievement of organizational objectives.
  • Setting and monitoring clinical standards while actively participating in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Overseeing operational management of the service and providing clinical oversight as directed by the Head of Midwifery.
  • Performing regular Senior Midwifery Manager on Call duties.

Detailed Responsibilities

The post holder will:

  • Provide visible leadership and supervision to ensure high standards of care within maternity services.
  • Assist the Head of Midwifery in managing an efficient maternity department, serving as a role model for professional leadership and clinical practice.
  • Offer guidance and support to midwives, nurses, and support staff, acting as a clinical expert.
  • Ensure that midwifery care is evidence-based and delivered by competent practitioners in accordance with Trust policies.
  • Support workforce planning strategies and maintain professional development to uphold midwifery registration.
  • Conduct appraisals and development plans for staff, ensuring performance management aligns with healthcare standards.

Qualifications

Essential Criteria

  • Experienced Midwife
  • Midwifery degree
  • Leadership and management experience
  • Mentorship or equivalent qualification

Desirable Criteria

  • Master's degree in midwifery
  • Leadership training
  • Professional Midwifery Advocate (PMA)
