Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver strategic, high-quality, timely, and risk-based legal counsel on inquiries from across the ICO, particularly overseeing legal advice on intricate and high-profile cybersecurity cases.
  • Provide specialized legal advice in designated areas, staying well-informed on relevant legislation and procedural guidelines, while leading the development of strategies for complex legal challenges.
  • Supervise and mentor in-house legal professionals and coordinate with external legal counsel on significant cases and legislative matters.
  • Promote continuous improvement in all areas of responsibility, recommending enhancements, and leading initiatives to ensure successful implementation.
  • Represent the Commissioner/ICO at national and international meetings and events where senior representation is essential, which may involve travel.
  • Identify potential opportunities and risks to the ICO's reputation, recommending improvements in information rights and cybersecurity practices across targeted sectors.
  • Engage with media and external stakeholders on critical legal matters pertinent to the ICO's operations.
  • Advise on the development of guidance materials published by the ICO to ensure legal accuracy and compliance with current legislation, providing strategic legal insights relevant to specific areas of expertise.
  • Independently manage a caseload of ongoing cybersecurity legal issues, ensuring adherence to ICO standards, policies, and regulatory priorities.
  • Contribute to the broader mission and influence of the ICO by participating in projects and advising on the formulation of policies and procedures.

Candidate Profile

Essential Qualifications:

  • Qualified to practice as a Solicitor, Barrister, or Chartered Legal Executive in England and Wales, or possess an equivalent professional qualification from another jurisdiction, with potential requirements to undertake qualifying examinations.
  • Extensive experience providing complex legal advice in high-pressure environments, whether in advisory roles or managing significant enforcement cases.
  • Proficient in advising on cybersecurity and data protection law, ideally within an information technology context.
  • Experience supervising other legal professionals, with a capacity to develop management skills.
  • Adept at identifying and managing opportunities for continuous improvement and organizational change.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of cybersecurity legislation.
  • Ability to effectively manage workload in high-pressure situations.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
