The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) serves as the autonomous authority overseeing information rights. In an era dominated by data, we offer guidance, support, and advice to organizations, ensuring they meet their obligations while safeguarding individuals' personal information.

As a forward-thinking employer, we are dedicated to positively impacting the careers and lives of our team members, fostering an environment that encourages curiosity, collaboration, and respect.

The successful candidate will deliver expert legal counsel regarding cybersecurity matters and collaborate with various departments to ensure a unified approach, efficiency, and the provision of high-quality, timely, and risk-informed legal guidance to the ICO.

Position Responsibilities

The Lead Cybersecurity Attorney will operate under the directives of the Commissioner and Executive Team. Responsibilities include advising on legal strategies, including guidance on ICO cybersecurity policies concerning specific regulatory actions, which may encompass enforcement, prosecution, or appeals based on case specifics.

As a recognized legal authority in this domain, the Lead Cybersecurity Attorney will extend technical support on cybersecurity and associated data protection laws to investigators, subject matter experts, legal professionals, and other stakeholders within the organization.

The role primarily involves managing and overseeing legal activities related to cybersecurity, particularly concerning intricate and high-profile cases. • Provide expert guidance in designated areas, ensuring familiarity with all pertinent legislation and procedural regulations while leading the development of strategies for novel and complex legal challenges.
  • Supervise and mentor in-house lawyers and provide instructions to external legal counsel on significant legal cases and legislative issues.
  • Drive continuous improvement in all areas of responsibility, recommending changes and leading initiatives to ensure successful implementation.
  • Represent the Commissioner/ICO at national and international meetings and events where senior representation is necessary, with potential travel required.
  • Identify opportunities and risks to the ICO's reputation, recommending enhancements to information rights and cybersecurity practices in targeted sectors and organizations.
  • Engage with media and external stakeholders on critical legal matters related to the ICO's mission.
  • Advise on guidance materials published by the ICO to ensure legal accuracy and compliance with current legislation, leading strategic legal input in specialized areas.
  • Independently manage a caseload of ongoing cybersecurity legal issues, ensuring alignment with ICO standards, policies, and regulatory priorities.
  • Contribute to the broader operations and influence of the ICO by participating in projects and advising on policy and procedure development.

Candidate Profile

Essential Qualifications:

  • Qualified to practice as a Solicitor, Barrister, or Chartered Legal Executive in England and Wales, or possess an equivalent professional qualification from another jurisdiction, with the potential requirement to undertake the Solicitors' Qualifying Examinations.
  • Extensive experience providing complex legal advice in high-pressure environments, either in advisory roles or managing significant enforcement cases.
  • Proven experience in advising on cybersecurity and data protection law, ideally within an information technology context.
  • Experience supervising other legal professionals, with some managerial experience or the ability to quickly develop these skills.

  • Proven ability to manage workloads effectively, particularly in high-pressure situations.

  • Understanding of the regulatory landscape and the public sector, including the democratic, political, and organizational framework of a regulatory body.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
