Position Overview

We are seeking applications for the role of a laboratory support worker within the Biochemistry Laboratory at Oxford University Hospitals. This position offers both full-time and part-time opportunities, with varying shift patterns available. The full-time schedule typically includes early and late shifts, while part-time roles will align with peak operational hours in the afternoons and early evenings. There may also be occasional requirements for night and weekend shifts.

Key Responsibilities

Your primary responsibilities will include assisting in the specimen reception area, which involves:

  • Preparation and organization of patient samples.
  • Inputting necessary information into the laboratory information management system.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and orderliness of the workspace.

Some light physical tasks may be necessary. We are looking for candidates who demonstrate strong attention to detail and practical judgment. Proficiency in keyboard skills and prior experience in a laboratory or healthcare setting would be beneficial. Comprehensive training will be provided to ensure you can effectively fulfill your role.

Main Duties

Your role will be crucial in preparing specimens, primarily blood and urine, for analysis in our diagnostic laboratories. Many patients, both in the hospital and in general practice, require laboratory tests to diagnose or monitor various health conditions. Careful handling of specimens upon arrival and during preparation for testing is essential. This position is vital in supporting patient care through accurate laboratory processing.

Our laboratories operate continuously to facilitate critical testing for patients, including those in emergency departments and newborns, as well as routine monitoring for common health issues.
